Title: Pulley noise...
Post by: bunj on 30 January 2012, 08:16
Last couple of days noticed a whine/squeal coming from one of my pulleys I assume.  Also it seems the air con has stopped working at the same time.  Are the pumps prone for failure? It sounded to me though that the noise was higher up ie cam pulleys???

Any help mucho appreciated, Bunj.

I had the same problem last week. Spray some WD40 and see if it stops or a bit, to diagnose if it is the fan belt/pulley. It turned out the bearing on the tensioner pulley was shot! Mine had been standing for 3 weeks so I think with a bit of water ingress and freezing the bearing gave up. Got a new tensioner for £25 :)

All sorted, turned out a small piece of bracket had moved on to a pulley and was causing the noise.

if your air con doesn't work get it checked out, could either be low on gas, a leak or the compressor gone pop

Sorry I meant to say but was in a rush yesterday.  We decided the noise was definatley from the timing belt side rather than aux belt.

Started to remove the top cam pulley cover (plastic)only got it lifted an inch or so and noticed on the side of the cambelt tensioner there was a small bracket with a sharp pointed end which had somehow moved into the edge of the pulley. If your standing at the front of the car looking at the engine the bracket is between the innerwing and the tensioner.  Managed to push it out of the way with a large flat head, job done.

As for the air con, tested it and it was fine??? maybe the compressor is getting lazy.

Managed to adjust my handbrake cable up also...result.
