They're like marmite but love 'em or hate them if you want auto you must have DSG.

Im manual all the way after a 1 hr test drive but im open minded, i would like a dsg for a week so maybe Dsg in the future.

When I bought my ED30 5 years ago I'd never heard of DSG - and was almost in disbelief when the salesman offered me the choice of manual or auto!
I took the manual.
Whilst waiting for the car to arrive, I signed up here and read all about the GTI.
Over the 2 years of ownership I read alot about how great DSG was... So when my ED30 was written off I test drove DSG a few times and loved it.

I ordered it on my R, but it was still in the back of my mind that although I loved it on various test drives - would I still love it after using it for weeks / months / years as opposed to the couple of hours worth of test drives?!

The answer is YES. It's brilliant!  Would I pick it on my next VW? Absolutely.

Would I pay nearly 2 grand for it? No.
Is it good? Yes.
Would I want a second hand car with no warranty and DSG? No.

Manual for me - people seem to get over excited about the whole thing though. Buy what suits you, not what suits others!

Probably the same tbh. If my car was only for weekend blasts I would defo go the manual route.... but recently find myself sitting in more and more traffic. Not exactly what the dsg boffins had in mind, but stop start traffic is one of the benifits of autos.

I use my golf to drive to work and back, that's it and I'd never have the manual for this task as it's a pain in the ass.

I'm still looking for a toy following my parting of ways with my R1 and XJR1300 at the moment and they are both manual cars  :wink:

I have always had manual and have owned mk1 to 6 golfs. After selling my R last year I bought a GTD in DSG and drove it for 6 months. DSG I am sure is fine for some but I didn't feel I had the same control as a manual. When on a twisty road those paddles were always in the wrong place. The GTD was traded against a Scirocco which just might go back in for an edition 35 petrol is best.....

I don't mind either transmission. For sheer useability the DSG wins hands down. People who say manual is the "pure" driving experience irritate me, especially as most high end sports cars/supercars now ONLY come with a DSG or SSG 'box and similarly most professional race series' have sequential boxes too.  :evil:

Which has NOTHING to do with DSG.
A sequential box is a manual box, operated using electronics/hydraulics with a totally manual input...the whole gearbox ethos is different.

Sequential 'boxes are a whole different kettle of fish.

I've driven manuals all my driving career [which is longer than I want to admit to on here] and would not entertain auto's; but the DSG is not like automatics of the past and my next car [hopefully a new R to be ordered this year] will have DSG.

I dont really think it matters what it is... you either like it or you dont. I dont really like it... but wont deny it would come in very handy for dealing with traffic.

Interesting...
The ones I've used (Sadev on competition cars, or bike gearboxes) all have standard clutches for pulling away and once moving you just bang up and down the box with no clutch.

In any case...a sequential gearbox is a very fine thing indeed...but DSG is NOT a sequential gearbox, no matter which way you dress it up.

This subject always make me laugh as people always get far too emotional about it. I have had 3 DSG equipped cars and I love it. Just to add a bit of knowledge around the subject here is the DSG definition from the Net:

The Direct-Shift Gearbox commonly abbreviated to DSG, is an electronically controlled dual clutch multiple-shaft manual gearbox, in a transaxle design - without a conventional clutch pedal, and with full automatic, or semi-manual control. The first actual Dual Clutch transmissions derived from Porsche in-house development for 962 racing cars in the 1980s.
In simple terms, it is two separate manual gearboxes (and clutches), contained within one housing, and working as one unit.

Complex, but ultimately the best both worlds.

My next car which should be here in a few weeks is an Edition 35 5DR DSG in Carbon Grey  :cool:

BMW have now made manual a non cost option on the M5 in the USA, but not for the UK which is weird.
