try this http://www.matey-matey.com/golf_buying_guide.shtml
8v is cheaper insurance than 16v i know that much...
Ebay, autotrader..... Found mine at a garage round the corner!

Got my 8v out of the free adds for £325 with a full VAGSH and the insurance is £400 fully comp with 0 NCB and 0 points.
Hope this helps,
Nick

Hi i have recently bought a MK2 16v, there is a good buying guide on http://www.matey-matey.com
MAin body work things are
is it straight been crashed? any bodged repairs filler?
rust near wiper hole that is not used on the front
rusty tailgate near the number plate lights
rusty rear arches under the plastic covers
Than usual mechanical stuff, brakes warped maybe driven hard?
suspension ok?
engine noises especially on 16v on start up = tappets
smoking (blue) on start up = burning oil
may on oil cap = potential head gasket problems
Interior
usually have a worn drivers seat bolster, if its done hardly any miles and the seat is done in why? been clocked its really easy to do
general condition
Service history is good but mine didnt have any (had been lost)
all original kit is good too like bbs RA alloys
original mats, stereo etc so bit havent been cut up to shoe horn stereo gear in.
The 16v is insurance group fifteen i think and 8v 14, the 16v if faster and personally woth the bit extra
i paid £1650 for a j plate with 80k on the clock all original with two owners in the same family as a guide, but i thought that was cheap
Also don't just get taken by the moment (we have all been there) and buy a poor car, wait go see a few, drive some etc
Hope this helps

Word of warning!!!!!
once you have bought and owned a mk1 or 2 gti golf you WILL be addicted, i have owned golfs on and off for around 9 years now and i smile all the time when driving a mk2.
the other thing to consider is do you want a 5 or 3 door and i know you will say a 3 door, but most of them have been owned by chavs and baseball capped halfwits. you will find a nicer 5 door  i know they are not as cool in alot of peoples eyes. :undecided:

I think my golf (5 door) looks better than alot of three door ones been chaved up lol I would have prefered a 3 door but this car was a K plate 16v for a mere 1000 so a 5 door it was !!

There is a good guide in a book published by haynes called "You and your Golf GTI"
Cheers, and happy hunting.
