Stick the VAT up to 25% that will sort it.
-
That's quite cheap.
All the stadia and land etc.. for £766 Million
Compare that to Yankee Stadium.
Only 50, 291 seats.
Cost £988.3 Million.

Ouch.
Maybe they'll re-coup their costs just by charging babies full admission price

I know!
I only found that out when Wales said they might play Mexico at Football there.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/16752531.stm
And they built it next door to the old stadium.
-
as al murry would say...its a bit sh!t really...
-
The london 2012 logo cost half a million.
-
It just seems mad as to how they are supposed to actually make any money off the 2 week event.

Recent advise from my Company as we have offices in central London is to take annual leave during the Olympics, or work from other offices. This is due the the Transport system not being able to cope!
Our parent company is Atkins and they designed the olympic park!
-
Im going on holiday when this crap is on can you imagine what the trains and roads are going to be like. Fook that
-
Don't start me off on this waste of money and council tax.
Now have got it we have to support it as too much money is tied up in it, but just like the referendum on Europe we did not get the choice we were promised
-
Surely a lot of businesses big and small will benefit from the Olympics
To be honest I'm not that fussed either way.
-
Olympics has ruined everything for me, trains will run less frequent due to more loading and unloading at each station, no changeover services at Dartford and limited service to Gravesend... oh plus this year south eastern said, the ticket fair will only go up for people traveling within greater London not further afield. So living next to Gravesend means my commute to work will be ruined! Also due to nature of my job no annual leave is allowed during Olympics and train travel went up 9% which south eastern lied about again
Oh and Woolwich dockyard will be shut during the games.
Tomorrow Greenwich becomes a royal borough, Greenwich itself is nice (just town center) but the rest of the surrounding which is part of Greenwich council is a hell hole. Why waste and make Greenwich a royal borough, its not in the same league as royal Tunbridge Wells.

To the tune of 14 bn in two weeks? I doubt it.
But it's no bother, once the tories have finished off the NHS there should be plenty of spare money. Enough for the Olympics and the odd MP to get their moat cleaned

Time to buy a hous there quick tho as value will rise
-
As above. What a waste of money and couldnt have chose a better time.
The oylmpics is also asking for terrorist attacks and this is a bigger fail than the dome imo.
-
Surely they should pay me to buy a propery within the Greenwich borough, there are some descent area's but they come already with a hefty premium, if this wasnt the case I would of bought my house there.
But as said what a waste.
-
It's true, absolutely no jobs have or will be created as a result of the Olympics. It will bring no tourism money in whatsoever, or help promote the UK on a global stage.
Let's just do nothing and go back to reading the Daily Mail. God I miss Diana.

Far from being a Tory but its the last Labour Government who have fecked it for us, now they say they will not reverse the cuts the Condems have started.
Cant forgive myself for voting labour as I am to blame for most fo the sh!te we are in now.......
Still at least we will not get the olympics again for a while after the mess we will make of this one

It doesn't matter who you vote for, the government always gets in

Tell me about it. SE Trains are rubbish even when conditions are absolutely perfect. Thats why I drive to work in central London when I can (nights and weekends).
I got my 2 Olympic weeks booked off though, so I won't have to deal with the main disruption.
I read something that said it works out cheaper to live in Greenwich (zone4) and commute a shorter distance rather and live out in Kent or Essex and commute in, even though houses might be cheaper, you pay so much more in train fare.

Its true...
My brother lives in Bexleyheath which is zone 5 I believe, his "travelcard" is cheaper monthly than my train fare between; Northfleet to Woolwich Arsenal, which is a shorter track distance and it also means I use a non congested part of the router. Also lets not forget his travelcard allows him to use trains, underground, overground, DLR and Buses where as my seasonal ticket is purely for the train.
Piss take to be honest, but I do actually prefer where I live in Northfleet compared to buying in most parts of abbeywood/thamesmead even if it is zone 4.
-
i work for stagecoach in the n/e of Scotland and we are sending buses and drivers down to be used at the Olympics,we recently got a new fleet of 20+ double deckers so there being driven down there stripped of all there livery and painted or wrapped white, used for 3 ish weeks then the reverse happens,so sir soutar must be making a pretty penny from that
-
I'm finding the whole Olympics to be totally bonkers.
1. No food vendor is allowed to sell just chips other than McDonald's. The exception being when served with fish.
2. The whole transport for London campaign where they are encouraging their core users (commuters who use the network to get to work and generally have paid up front for this service in the form of a season ticket) to walk, cycle or use any other method to get to work. Why not provide a service that can cope with the influx of extra people? Bloody shambles this Olympics. Can't wait for it to be over. Complete waste of money and inconvenience to everyone who lives and works in London. I have requested that I work from home but was refused.
-
Don't understand the whole chip thing at all!
I commute to London and the worst thing is we have been told no annual leave due to heightened security due to my job, which has lumbered me with having to commute. I love what they have said rather than running more trains, less will be running as they will have to account for longer stops for letting people on and off the 10carriage trains! Secondly my entire line was meant to be upgraded for 12 carriage trains, but over a month ago we got a letter saying upgrade is not going to be done in time and will only recommence after olympics. Even though the upgrade could of easily been done in time! Also they knew how many years ago that they won the olympics? Only to commence upgrade work 8months ago!
Bloody joke isn't the word, will dread the commute for the next two months. They can barely run a day to day service so this is just asking for trouble.
-

This.
According to the figures in the first link the games cost £14bn and are going to recoup £10bn directly...
I don't know why everyone is getting their knickers in a twist, as I'm sure you realise that £2.2bn is lottery funded and £2bn is privately sponsored.
-
It's the security issues in the news yesterday that pisses me off! Surely security should have been paramount with our reputation in the world atm and they haven't even sorted that out, instead they draft in off duty armed forces personel of which more than a couple will be losing their jobs due to cuts!
Some days i fcuking hate this country and the people that run it!
-
no different to FIFA and the skimming that has been going on there for years. £20+ Million pounds was taken in illegal bribes for just a couple of work cups.
This was money was just the tip of the iceberg and for just 2 of the FIFA elite... I imagine its no different with the games.
-
examples anyone....

Dont get me started on FIFA.
Im actually looking forward to the Olympics (within reason) and as a proud Londoner its great to be able to show off your city to the world.
Having said that it wont stop me moaning when I get on the Jubilee line to the Wharf in the mornings, not looking forward to that.

SAM's in east london(not the Kebab shop in Hackney) , Typhoon's in Northolt, an extra 3500 troops, Armed units with High velocity Assualt weapons and a complete leave ban, must be some significant chatter being picked up at MI6.........
I hope it all goes with only the expected trasport chaos really giving us any problems, I am a proud londoner too but feel that this has come at a cost which we could do without.

True but when the decision was made that we waned to hold the Olympics we were not in the mess we are in now.

I thought it was a dubious proposition back then, given the recent public money pits and security issues.....
We have rebuilt a part of East London and given it a lick of paint, which in a short time will look just as ruined as it did 5 years ago.
I seriously doubt it will do any measurable good to our economy, where as investing the same amount of money into say manufacturing would.
I do hope its a great spectacle and many people enjoy it, I will be avoiding it and doing something less boring instead
-
Just been told that if you want to cycle into work you better not use the "Games Lanes" otheriwse you will be fined £130 or if you can't pay your bike will be impounded.
So TfL are encouraging us to use alternative means to get to work, but if you do you risk incurring a £130 fine or your bike will be taken from you and you end up using the tube anyway?
Well done TfL for making yourselves look like a bunch of muppets.
-
the cost hasnt spiralled YET
it will DURING and after the Games
:undecided:
In COMPENSATION
for all the people a LOT of VERY VERY P!$$ED off and Heavy handed Grunts have offended after getting shafted by YET ANOTHER GOVERNMENT

I am one of the 17,000 is it now? military personnel that will be working at the Olympic park for 8 weeks.
I am in 2 mind about it, frustrated that I'm going to be dicked around working 12hour days 6 on 2 off with a 45min+ commute each way, living in a portacabin in a field with 5000 other military folk and generally being bashed from pillar to post while having to deal with the possibility that I may let an 'offensive weapon/device' into the games as I will be operating one of the rapiscan (x ray machines) for the duration.
On the other hand, this is a once in a lift time opportunity to do work that is out side of my normal routine, work with some of the willing public who want to go to the events and have a bubble while doing so. I think I will get out of it what I put in, so if any of you have tickets at the Olympic park venue come holla at me
As we kept getting told 'This will be a summer like no other.' Cheese central
How many of you guys/rest of the public would be moaning if we were hosting the football world cup instead? I know it isn't on quite the same scale but that would cost an AWFUL lot of tax payers money...
-
i dont think you can compare this to football.... football would bring in much more money than it costs to run a tournament
-
Enjoy the x-ray machines, they suck. I've used them in the pasts and you can still get thing through if you know how

In all seriousness I probably shouldn't have said that. People have been getting in a lot of trouble recently for posting things on the internet :lipsrsealed:

I drive past the missiles on blackheath common this weekend. Bizarre how we have come to the conclusion that it's ok to have missiles on public land to defend us against a "possible" threat. Police state or what?

I find it silly that they think shooting a plane down over the middle of London would be a good idea?
-
Yeah, would the debris from the falling plane not have a huge chance of hitting something else in central london? Not that there are many important buildings in central london is there?
-
End of the day, if and it is still a big IF there is a terrorist attack, it will be more than likely what happened last time, suicide bombers on the tube.
Not much or anything you can do to stop that to be honest.
I hope nothing happens as I am really looking forward to the Olympics

On a lighter note . . . . Just watching Athletes from all around the world turning up for the Olympics. The Irish fencing team have turned up in a transit pick up with wooden posts and concrete mix.

Don't start tha up again. I did laugh that the coach drivers of some athletes got lost for four hours trying to find the Olympic site. Must have used sat nav.

I don't quite understand what the SAM's are for... However in other news did people see that terrorist in the USA that was making long range RC-planes with jets able to do 600mph? Basically an UAV, except he strapped C4 to it and planned to fly it into a building.
Also anyone on here go on TED? There's a recent video about future crimes on there, good food for thought as he goes on about how laws on firearms are very strict in the UK, but with the uprise in 3d printers you could just print a gun off. Some of the idea's of what the future may hold is a bit scary.

The Surface to Air Missiles, and all the press and public hype around it, is exactly what the government want. It's acting mainly as a deterrent. However, there will be far far less casualties/deaths by falling debris, than a plane toppling the strand or somewhere similar. And with all the propaganda that these extremists can spout about doing it, getting one up on us Western scum! It'll be our middle finger up to them if we can foil them before they even get to that point though.
