Title: Wheel Choice
Post by: golfmanj80 on 26 January 2012, 21:30
I have come to my GTD [ ACC, Vancouvers] from a Mk5 Golf 140d on 16" alloys, and even on comfort setting am finding the ride a bit harsh for my old bones!, do you guys who have driven on both 18" and standard 17" feel that the latter give a more compliant ride ?

And I know I might seem odd...............but I do like the look of the standard wheels !!

I came from a mk5 GT 170 tdi on standard 17" Classix wheels to a GTD on 18" Charleston Shadows. I found the ride in the mk5 on 17's was fine.

Although a little firmer, I can't say I find the ride on 18" wheels harsh - and I've also got old bones! Having said that, a GTD on 17's should give a a slightly more compliant ride though than one on 18's. My car doesn't have ACC so I don't know how the ride in my car would compare to your ACC-specced car on 'comfort' setting.

I had 17s on my GTD when I first got it whilst I waited for the dealer to change them to Vancouver 18s.

Can't say I've noticed any change to the ride comfort - it is a harder ride in standard set up whichever wheel size (mine's non-ACC)

I came from a 140d mk5 on 17s (turinos) and thought the 18son the mk6 were better handling but slightly harder wouldn't trade the Vancouver for anything though they look the bees knees.

I got the Vancouvers for the same reason - they look great - but I find the ride pretty nuggety on my GT140. Drove a friends Bluemotion (16"?) and it was like a magic carpet. As the car's just a getmetoworkandback motor and not my fun car, I find myself wondering whether to fit something smaller...

yep on 18" even with ACC in comfort it will still be a bit firm (well my GTI is), i reduced tyre pressure by 2psi which helped a little, mines done 4k now and it is starting to settle down and become smoother so should be sweeter at 10k

your tyres will also have a impact as my Dunlops are known to be a harsh ride!

get on the goodyear F1 Asymmetric 2 when you can as I have those on our Audi S Line which smoothed out the ride from the standard tyres

but ultimately it is a sporty car so its going to be firm whatever but apparently putting them on 17" with ACC in comfort is very comfortable indeed!

Thanks for all the info guys, seems the Goodyears are the way to go on the Vancouvers ? your quite right it is a performance car after all !, we have prob got a lot of rough old potholed roads to contend with in rural Wiltshire !!
