Title: Gti wheel arch broken off after unpleasant pothole experience.
Post by: lat8v on 25 January 2012, 10:53
Sadly, our Gti has had the misfortune of driving through a pothole in the car park outside our bank. (We are persuing this in hope of reimbursement).

It was full of water and turned out to be deep enough to ground the plastic trim under the front spoiler, the energy of the impact traveled up to the outer wheel arch and snapped the front 50% of it clean off !

Is it the kind of thing that can be sourced 2nd hand, or is it something that I should only buy brand new ?

I have noticed that there are many non-genuine ones available on Ebay - but do not know if the fit on those ones is any good ?

I did notice that the part of the wing which is exposed since the outer snapped off shows signs of glue.  I am assuming that it has been an issue in the past.  I am sure that they are meant to be attached with dedicated rivets/clips.

I have also noticed that these parts appear to be vehicle specific, and that earlier ones will not fit our big bumper 92 8 valve....which is a shame as there appear to be some on ebay just up the road from me.

Any advice here is most welcome....Its really not looking good at the moment

You will need a 90's spec arch which are readily available just put an add in the wanted section. there are about 5/6 rivots that hold it into place. Get a genuine one too.
