Title: So I got pressured into looking at a 27" Mac 3.1ghz 8gb ram blah blah...
Post by: clipperjay on 24 January 2012, 15:33
I was still looking at laptops and still can't find the one I wanted which was a Asus N75 i7
Instead I got shown the flagship 27" desktop replacement from Apple. (All in one computer built into the screen)
It was nice but, no USB 3.0 and can't change the hardrive unless it’s an apple and on top it was about £1,800!
I asked what i7 it had no one knew  :lipsrsealed:
So yeah no reason not to buy one..........?
Can't overclock it and something about rhino (mini-DisplayPort) for the HDMI it needs an adaptor which apparently all laptops are going to be using apple's proprietary plug?
Someone tell me I was right to feel something was just not right with the Apple?
It’s like buying a Merc its good but, it drives itself no feel no tweaking? It’s that sort of issue I had with it?
My wife loves it and wants it!  :undecided:
Only thing I loved 100% was the lovely LED screen 27" pureness plus excellent hyper threading, was so smooth aswell!
Whats your take on these beasts?
My father just came back from HK and he said a few of them back home broke down due to overheating, but over there humidity is a killer on anything that gets too hot!
One more thing any Mac's before 2011 didn't have sound on the mini-DisplayPort? But after 2011 all of them now carry sound and vision?

Nice if all you want is an all in one that you can't do much too. You can get faster machines for that money or less else where if you aren't fussed about the all in oneness, you can also get an as good screen for that too.

All depends on what you want.

Oh and my father in laws iMac also overheats in the UK summer, he's got a fan control program that turns all the fans on to cool it down and it still plays up

I have an 2010 Imac & i have no problems with it all, i am about to tweak mine slightly by increasing the ram to 16gb but apart from that i can't think of anything else i would want to tweak.

So my old man was on to something with overheating
I agree I built faster machine years back when the all in ones came out running P4's

No problems with flash on mine that i have come across, my HDD is big enough for me if it ever becomes an issue i will just buy a back up HDD you can pick up 3TB ones for £150-200

You can also replace the HDD in an imac if you really want to http://gigaom.com/apple/how-to-replace-your-imacs-hard-drive/ (http://gigaom.com/apple/how-to-replace-your-imacs-hard-drive/)

I'll muck about with them some more, and see what turns up over the next month or so.
I don't want to spend more than 1K to 1.3K and there is no movement on Apples prices at all.
I might have to go abroad to buy one, UK has to be one of the steepest tech hikes!

I bought a 64GB SSD for my PC.  It's more than enough to install Windows 7, and add a few game and intensive apps like Photoshop etc.

Well the laptop I wanted Asus N75SF is the only laptop that has an empty slot for a SSD.
I wish mainline manufacturing companies would make room for what people want rather than what they think we want?
Bob what make and how many magic beans are they these days?

Okay guess it wouldn't loose speed, but if it went down I'm guessing it would be like my SD cards and it means full format on them?

SSD's are flash-like-media and have a finite number of writes to each cluster, so defragging it would shorten the length of it's already limited life, limited life meaning that they are 20-25% less reliable than mechanical drives. Some people claim it does improve performance, doubt it would be as drastic an increase as it is on mechanical drives.

Ideally I want one with a SDD spare drive bay. I looked at a samsung 700 it was about £1400 odd?

I said to wait for the 3rd Gen i core series, they're going to be kick ass, apparently. Faster AND more power efficient than the current i core's, win / win.

Some laptops you can remove the DVD drive and whack in a hard drive as a replacement, though you best check that the laptop you get CAN do this and that these are available for it BEFORE you buy the laptop. Also check that it may be possible to upgrade using a mini PCIE slot inside with one of these :

Ohhhh 3rd gen mmmm April-ish?
Okay I can hold off
I looked at a Asus N55sf smaller brother of the N75 and the screen was alright nothing great TBH.
I just thought the square SSD just plug it in didn't realise they came in PCI-e! Or is this what e-SATA is?

You can get a variety of SSD's for different purposes, some will be SATA, others Mini-PCIE (for laptops) and some will even replace the DVD slot on the laptop. Just depends on how you want to upgrade it, so kinda opens more doors as to which laptop you get

Just check that the laptop you want will be able to upgrade the way you want.
