Done my 2nd oil change yesterday and again had trouble removing the sump plug. Last year the sump plug just turned in the hole and then eventually bit to the thread and came out. Upon investigation of the old sump plug one of the thread on the plug was broken. I thought I could have damaged the thread in the sump but the new plug went in and tightened up nicely. 1 year on and it was time to change the oil again. Again I had the same problem. This time however when I got the plug out the threads on it were fine. So now I think the thread did go last time and I was just lucky that the plug tightened all the way as the plug I put in yesterday goes tight then when you try to tighten it more it goes loose.
It is currently as tight as I can do it before it goes loose and there is a slight leak. I have phoned the garage and my mate has a sump repair kit which he thinks should be able to sort the problem out without the need for a new sump.
I recently helped 2 mates do their oil, one Seat and one Vauxhall, and they went perfect. Is this a regular problem with the mk4 sumps as when I come to do it next year I want to be able to do it with out breaking anything lol!

I had the problem with my golf and yes it is a common problem for th vw alloy sump as the thread comes out you have 2 choices new sump or alloy coil the sump with a sump repair kit i did my 8 months ago and been ok no leaks or problems

Yeah the sump repair kit is being used on it on wednesday. Just as I start to sort things on the car something else always happens lol! Just replaced all filters, coolant, new battery and new front pads and started to like driving it again.

re tap the hole and then use a bigger sump bolt

What comes as part of the sump repair kit out of interest?

I think it's a tool that allows you to re thread the sump hole ready for a new sump plug to be fitted.

And I think some use a slightly different(bigger) plug , with a different thread, think I ve heard they off a French car.
I ended up just buying a new sump then messed around with it after, keep as a spare,

Depends on the kit some use the same plug some use new bigger plugs.

we had a engineering company helicoil and skoda police car for us but a couple of months later it come loose and dumped the oil out and ruined the engine so be careflu

I would not trust a helicoil on a sump plug, if it works loose and falls out you have had it.

Next time tighten it with your hand, then get spanner and tighten it. :wink:

Exactly what happened with mine, so I got some jb weld, put it on the threads and wound it in, then a bit on top for luck.... Drove it to Paris and back and it's been fine and this was about a year ago!!
If the sump has to come off anyway to be re-tapped ( as you don't want to be getting swarf in there) then it may as well be replaced with a new one.... Just haven't got round to doing it yet!!!!
Oil pick up at the same time too :smiley:

All sorted. £46 to put a new thread in the sump and fit my front brake pads :grin:

4 hrs labour he reckons which is about £140-£150 then £30 for the bushes so near on £200 :sad:

do it yourself mowlamb you dont need to remove the rear beam

I know, seen the how to and it seems like way too much hassle. It is something I'm going to look into maybe having a go but everyone has said it's a lot easier to pay someone else lol!
