Title: No heat from heater.
Post by: stainesy on 23 January 2012, 11:13
Just went for my first long drive in the bora. Had wife and daughter in the car so they wanted the heating in. So put it on and no heat.
Air flows ok and there is a slight change in force with blower on when I switch between cold and hot.
Any ideas?

Is there a fuse for the heater? If so what's the symbol for it?

Check your coolant level as it takes heat from your coolant, possibly an air lock in the system

My coolant level is actuly over the max mark.
Thinking it could be my thermostat? Where is the thermostat on the 1.6 16v lump?

If the heater is blowing air you dont need to check the fuse - its working

Does the temp guage show the engine is running at normal temp ? How long does it take to get to temp ? Even if the stat is faulty it will still blow hot air just take a lot longer to do so.

If the car is running hot while normal driving - could be water pump

If non of them you might either have a blocked heater motor or the heater controll for the temp could be broken

Cheers fella but realised it ain't gona be a fuse as the blower works. There's just no heat.

It could be the thermostat if it is stuck the hot water won't be able to circulate the the heater coil.

I did notice it was realy cold air when I first turned heater on after car heated up. Car temp sits perfect in the middle all the time. After about half hour of driving the heater air went up by maybe 1 degree lol. It was slitely warmer but still cold air.
When I put the lower on cold then set h from could to hot there is a slight change in lower force like you would normaly get.

I was thinking more that the water would take longer to get hot. But even so. When the car got up to normal running temp wouldn't the heater then blow hot air?

just went shopping came home and parked car up. i thought after the drive i would check the heat of the hoses in diferant locations.
found the 2 hoses that run into the cab for the heater matrix. the in and out hose both seem hot ish. not to hot i cnt keep my hand on them though. the hoses to the rad seem pretty hot though. so if the hose after the thermostat is hot but the ones going into the cab are warm what does that mean?
my thermopstat seems to be working ok as the temp always sticks at 90 on the temp gauge.

how easy is it to get to and change the matrix?

also is the matrix a main part in the circulation or is it like a side bit thast comes off the circulation if you no what i mean.
if the heater matrix was blocked would it effect the circulation of coolant? or is the coolant system its own circulation and the matrix just comes off of that?

Ok this is. Complete mystery to me now. Just took car for long drive. Temp gauge at 90 so all up to temp on tickover. Felt all hoses and all are nice and hot. Hose going into heater matrix piping hot and hose coming out of heater matrix piping hot. Inside the cab when I put it on cold it blows with power. Switch it to hot and still blows fine but a slight diferance in power telling me the dial is working. The air get a tiny but warmer that cold but still not even warm.
Wtf is going on? Don't make sence.

Would water pump give similar issues if in the way out?

Car would overheat wouldn't it if it was water pump?
