Title: R32UK's MPS
Post by: R32UK on 22 January 2012, 15:40
Just when I thought I would never buy another R32 due to the spiralling cost of petrol... I have a car which is more uneconomical. I introduce to you the Mazda MPS!

Pro's

Nice half leather seats
Xenons
18" wheels as std
256+ bhp
doesnt stand out
LSD
Bose stereo (which isnt that great tbh)

Con's

Cost a fcuking fortune to run
£445 tax per year
not as good quality interior as the golf

Looks good. For some reason I thought you had a white one.

Much prefer these gen 1 MPS models to the current Gen 2s. The new ones look far too over-styled for my liking.

I think with the gen 2 they took on board the hype that the gen 1 didnt look hot hatch enough. works for me though

The other thing that gets me with the Gen 2 is that they didn't stick any more power in. Fair does the MPS is already a quick car but it leaves me with the impression that the gen 1 is better value.

Any interior pics?

I do somewhere but will have to dig them out. tbf I was up against a VXR yesterday, and despite the VXR poping and banging the MPS held it all the way.. only later i discovered that my tyres were running at 24psi  :lipsrsealed:

Not bad. A good VXR with nothing more than an exhaust can see up to 260hp (depending on the dyno) so that's about even with the MPS. IIRC then the Nurburgring Edition was rated at 256 with the Remus (which is the same as the MPS  :nerd:).

Although tbh I find VXR's very inconsistent. For example my mate just bought a standard Arctic Astra which can fairly give my Stage 1 GTI a run, and yet another guy I know with a standard Arctic (same age of car) just gets left behind. Obviously there's a bit of driver skill involved but there's a clear power discrepancy between the two Arctic's.

Think they're great cars though. Unfortunately a bit common IMO but great looking and sound pretty  too. Prefer the standard exhaust sound now as almost every VXR I see has a Remus.

Also meant to ask, is your MPS not mapped though?
Title: Re: R32UK's MPS
Post by: R32UK on 22 January 2012, 23:47
No... was booked in to get it mapped as I was going to keep for a few months. Then changed my mind and decided I am now looking at another car in the next few weeks  :lipsrsealed:

Came up against a few VXR's in the GTi (revo'd)... every one of them got left behind  :lipsrsealed:

My bro in-law has the American version of this, the Mazda Speed3, but in red.
Nice car, not been in it yet though.

My dad borrowed the car today... he gave me the keys back saying "its not my kind of car"  but did say its quick!

He always enjoyed driving the golf. I imagine as it was slightly more refined

My Mate used to have a Mazda 3 MPS-Aero.

Fooking rapid. Loved it.

I think the aero kit add a larger rear spoiler, different wing mirrors and lower suspension.... mainly to make it stand out a little more as a hot hatch. Think many of the earlier ones went unnoticed!! Which I kind of prefer

i like your mazda mate as you say doesnt stick out like a sore thumb, is this the fwd variant as opposed to the gen 1 which iirc was 4wd

3 MPS has never been 4wd but the 6 MPS was and uses the same engine.

The gen 1 MPS 3/6 are proper sleepers

Yes.. thats correct. The Mazda 3's are all FWD. The 6 MPS is 4WD, but has the same power and engine (so kind of similar to the R32... not quite enough power). Although a remap soon sorts that out!

Quite enjoy passing under the radar compared to a white Gti

The 6MPS has a 28% transmission loss

that seems pretty high... which is why I wouldnt get a mazda 6 anyway. 3 is much more fun to drive.

Love the Mazda 3 MPS.
Handles really well too.
The Bose is much improved in the gen 2 model :)
It may be expensive to run but it's a lot cheaper to buy than a golf :p
Probably more reliable too.

Much cheaper to buy.. which does help cover the running costs.

In terms of reliability I got it a service after it was bought... since then nothing what so ever! The rear electric windows stopped working from the drivers controlls once... then started again, and now seem fine.

So far its put the mk6 to shame on that front :lipsrsealed:

I like it. Looks like a really solid car externally.

My sis has got a new Mazda 3 MPS. I'm not a fan of it tbo. Plastic city inside compared to my Mk6.

NOW SOLD

... and back in a golf. cant say I thoroughly enjoyed my jap experience, but can say I have tried it. In short, the good

reliable
mega bang for buck
good spec
quite low key

the bad

cheap n plasticy interior
no road respect
awful suspension/driver feed back
very expensive parts when it goes wrong

p.s. the ed30 feels very sllooooooow in comparison  :lipsrsealed:

Yep Japs are really reliable, had two before getting a golf and none of them had any issues in 6yrs of ownership, had a 56 & a 58...

Yep but a simple remap should help sort that out. The MPS engines map to around 290hp (realistically speaking). The Edition 30 should see pretty near that figure (270-280) with a map. Where you will miss it though will be in the torque.

So when's the new project thread going up then?
