Title: t4 cam belt snap
Post by: ENERGY on 21 January 2012, 23:01
Anyone here know how much new valves cost, my mates got a 2.5tdi t4 which has just snapped a cam belt and hes giving it to me but we dont yet know the extent of the damage...

I take it its probably f**ked but then my caddys cam belt snapped and it was fine with a new belt on !

Anyway im getting it cheap so i dont mind have a tinker wiv it myself! keep me out of trouble for a while. How much roughly would it cost to fix if it was proper f**ked??

have a look on AUTODATA to see if the engine is interference (will bend valves) or non interference (wont bend valves)

diesels always hit,   iirc it's a twit of a job on a t4,

valves themselves are quite cheep scrap heads to pillage bits from are cheeper still,  but i would really recommend  dial gauging the the tops of the pistons before trying to fix it,  just to make sure there all still coming up to where they should.  depending how hard it decided to hit it may just need a couple of valves or it chould be valves, rod, piston, con rod, tappets, cam even cyl head

as a minimum you're going to need:

valves
cam belt
water pump
head gasket
head bolts
inlet & exhaust manifold
may aswell change the thermostat while you've got the system drained
oil and filter
new coolant

i'd say you're looking at at least £300
