I have fairly recently bought a valver off ebay (£255!) and after driving 280 miles back home from where i bought it from it was fine, didn't need to stop at all.(apart from petrol obviously)
Got it home and just hours after getting it back it i decided to take it for a spin where it overheated. After replacing the thermostat it seems to be ok, but when driving in traffic it gets a bit hot for my liking! the water temperature needle sits half way up but now and again it will get to about 3 quarters the way up.
Is this normal?
it is an 1987 on an E plate small bumper model if that helps
Cheers

Its not normal. As long as it doesnt flash red your okay for the time being.
You might want to check the radiator fan is coming on.

Give the whole system a good flush out then fill it up makeing sure you have the correct amount of Anti Freeze in there as it makes a difference to the temp of the system cos of it's cooling properties.
-
the higher the concentration of anti freeze you put in the car the less the cooling properties of the system
just do about a 50/50 mix of antifreeze & water. if you can, use de-ionised water

Half way is normal operating temperature, and 3/4 is nothing to worry about if you're sitting in traffic. As long as the fan is kicking in when it gets to about 3/4 then your cooling system is functioning perfectly :)
Only if the light starts flashing or if it goes higher than 3/4 you should worry :)

thanks guys, i will try the anti freeze idea
( FYI: the red light doesn't flash and the fan does kick in when water temp needle is at about 3/4 way up)
cheers

eeeerrrrrmmmmm, quick question without hijacking your thread!!!
My light always flashes red... from start up to running warm. I assumed it was a faulty sensor which I am due to check or am I about to meet my maker in a ball of flames? :undecided:

That happens if the level sender in the header tank is unplugged or broken, try bridging the pins to see if that stops it flashing :)
