Advice or a 2nd opinion please.
I took my car in for its first long life service today and as is always the case, a fixed price of £225 soon became £600 after two new tyres and the alignment of all 4 wheels had been undertaken. :sad:
When collecting the car, the receptionist said my car wouldn't need to come back for another 18000 miles or 2 years whichever was the sooner. When I got in the car, the MFD said i needed to get it serviced again in only 365 days or 9400 miles. My service book also said long life oil had not been used. When I went back to query both these aspects, the dealer said I had received Longlife 3 oil and then crossed out the error in my service book (which doesn't look too professional for when I decide to sell).
He also plugged in his laptop and set the service indicator to zeroise both the time and mileage of the next service so now it just reads Next Service --- or --- days. I queried the lack of any numbers and he assured me, the car would need to settle down over the next 2 days and would then put in its own figures saying when the next service was due. On the basis it did have a reading when i first got in the car, this doesn't seem to make sense.
Has any one else had the same thing on their Golf when picking it up after a service? - I have my doubts and can't help thinking it was a 6pm answer from a technician who'd noticed it was clocking off time and wanted to go home. I had hoped the fact that I'd spent dealer prices on the new tyres they would afford me a positive customer experience!
Am I worrying unduly?

I would be worried, not so much about the ----'s but that they could have used the wrong oil. I would ask for the service manager and go from there. If it turns out they use different oil for long life/annual servicing, which they might not, then I would ask them to change the oil again as a good will gesture (maybe in a years time?) as you are not confident they have serviced it correctly. One mistake... perhaps... but two ??? hmm

I totally agree! I'd even ask them to replace the service book because your right, it dont look too good! I had my Roc on longlife and it only counted down the final 1000 miles as it adapts to your style of driving etc as to how soon you would need the service. The receptionist isnt too clued up either IMO due to the fact that every car is different. I did 2.5yrs and 26k before my 1st service!

How Much! I think they've seen you coming. My first longlife service cost £169 and others on here have had their's for cheaper than that!
I definatley get a new service book from them and question the total price.

Appreciate the comments chaps, yes probably have paid above the odds but I've always (perhaps naively here) felt you get what you pay for and thought I was entrusting fully trained franchised dealership 'experts' here to set me up for another 18/24 months of trouble free motoring. I now certainly doubt their expertise and can see little care/attention has been applied. To cap it all, i've since noted their tyre fitter has left more dirty marks on the alloys than when I took it in. :angry: The frustrating thing is, I now have to waste my weekend free time to go back to the dealer to go through their lack of care.

Never buy tyres from Dealers, You'de of been billed £200 each no problem So your service was prolly £200

Thanks for the info on the various engine oils, sounds like the reference to Long life 3 oil being used was correct, its a shame the all important service book doesn't agree!
Anyway the good news. The dealer accepts they've cocked up and can not prove they have used long life oil so have offered to completely re do the service and also replace the service book at their own expense. Luckily, they were the supplying dealer so all replacement stamps will be consistent with the rest of my history.
I'm more than a bit tempted to put a mark on the items they will replace to make sure they actually do re service the car. At least I would if I knew where the dust/pollen filter etc etc were!
Just need to book it in now and incur the associated inconvenience of having go there and back again and not having a car for the day.
At least my persistence seems to have paid off. :smiley:

They did the same with my service book or would have until i told them to just leave it and not cross anything out. So mine has non longlife oil ticked too.
In the mk5 maintenance section theres a thread in there by TT about oil.
If you read it basically for the past few years VWuk has instructed their dealers to use longlife regardless of if the cars set to year or time/distance so if there doing what they are told it will have longlife in it.
The service indicator is correct as they changed from yearly to time and sistance the car has to then work it out so --- is before it has time to calculate.
