Nice write up. In fact it sounds exactly like the mag write ups on Golf GTIs back in the 80s, aside from the fuel economy issue which used to be a GTI strong point.

Thats ace and totally true. I've started to open mine upa bit now as she has 2000 miles on it absolutley loves the open road but is equally at home during my dull commute to and from work.

If I was to be critical of the review, I'd say he mentions very little that is specific to the Edition 35 - and in fact the GTI as a whole. Most of what he says could be said also of a standard Golf Mk6, the exception being the fuel consumption which, if I'm perfectly honest, remains one of the GTI's strong points amidst it's competitors (in particular the Focus ST and RS variants, the Mazda MPS, the Astra VXR and so forth).
A nice write-up but not what I expected from a site such as Piston Heads. :undecided:

In fact, a thought has just crossed my mind. The review leaves you thinking more about the author and his companions than it does the car. In essence, the GTI almost plays second fiddle in it's own review. It is this very characteristic which the review essentially revolves around so, in a way, it's actually a very clever review.
Hmmm... still undecided.

very true about the economy.. the mk6 gti could probably see double what I see in the MPS.
on a separate note, I doubt the ed35 is anywhere near as good economy as the GTI. Esp if it uses the old mk5 GTI engine.

part of the reason I've gone for a gti and not an ed35............... yeah yeah I know it's a gti who cares about economy... well I do, I'm changing from a 2.0 tdi so every little helps lol

A good choice then...
the mk6 engine offers a huge improvement in that department.

Ed35 aint too bad but the standard gti is fantastic on fuel, i got around 480 miles from a tank full (till light came on) on motorway to cornwall 70-80mph, engine only had 200 miles on it aswell, computer was saying 45mpg. Given petrol is around 10 p/litre cheaper thats not far off diesel economy.
P.s im going on the same route in May expecting anything from 30-35 mpg, proberly cost me a extra £20 over 600 miles but worth it

Well most of the reviews of the Edition 35 when it was launched brought their overall score down specifically because of the poorer economy. It's a shame really, at the end of the day it's just laziness on VW's part.
