Hi all,
I haven't got my GTI yet, it's got a build week 6 which has now been confirmed, so looking at delivery beginning of March (for 12 plate) assuming the weather is okay for the boats. However, I am looking into which bulbs I will need to convert the interior to LED as I previously had this on my A3 and it was great.
I believe I need 2 x 37mm festoon for the vanity lights, 1 (or possibly 2) x 43mm festoon for boot (and possibly glove box) and the rest are 501's (w5w). I've got the 37mm and 43mm festoons from the A3. I also have plenty 501's, these ones in fact http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/501194t10-mini-light-tower-leds-xenon-white-bulb-p-1545.html
Could someone please confirm which bulb is used for the glove box?
The 501's which I have are around 3cm in length whereas standard 501 bulbs are around 2cm in length. I plan on fitting these to the footwell and front and rear interior lights (I don't think I've missed any?). Could someone please check to see if there would be enough room to fit a 3mm bulb rather than the standard 2cm bulb? I would really appreciate it, as if they are too big I can order some smaller ones.
With the A3, you would get a bulb warning for interior lights, I don't think this is the case with the Golf (I hope not, what a useless feature for interior lights!). I would also like to know if anyone has done this already, and if so, do your LED's go out completely when they should. The reason I ask is because I fitted LED's to a Vauxhall many years ago and they stayed on very dim. I expect this may have been due to Vauxhall's wiring/design though. If they do stay on a little, I will get some resistors.
Cheers,
Scott

I would be very interested to know a list of bulbs required too. Want to get into a LED light too. If we can get a list of bulbs required it be great. and if anyone know if there be a error message on the dash too if I swap out all to LED
-
you will need to get can-bus leds to stop and warning etc as they use less power
-
this is all new to me.
One lead for each bulb

Are you sure? I was under the impression Golf's don't monitor interior bulbs, well, I've heard they might be monitored but a bulb warning light isn't displayed, which is ok as far as I'm concerned.
I soldered resistors in my A3 to avoid this problem.
-
I thought it was only the footwell lights that were monitored? Could be wrong mind.

It's a bit pointless really isn't it lol. I wonder if the local dealer would mind me pulling their cars apart on the weekend.......
-
One way to sort this out Ill buy some bulbs tmr and get back to ye
-
Interior lights don't get monitored. Got some red LED footwell lights in mine with no probs to date.

Cheers, let me know if you reckon there's enough room for 3cm 501's (rather than standard approx 2cm bulbs) if not I'll have to get some smaller ones!

White. the only colour to have Class. only mistake I made.... when for RED... get sick now every time I pass a white on. let us know how the remap goes any idea on cost?

The grass is always greener ..... !
Will do, it's not getting mapped until 26th March tho as I don't pick up until beginning of March at the earliest. They normally charge £375 but offer a discount for forum members.

I changed all my interior bulbs for white LEDs when I first got my car. I actually did a How To on the rforum - but I've accidentally deleted all my photobucket pictures, so it's pretty pointless now.
2 x 501 in overhead light
3 x 501 in rear overhead light.
1 x 501 in each footwell
1 x 501 in glove box
1 x festoon in each vanity mirror
There's also 1 x 501 in each wing mirror that I've never got round to changing as I was scared I broke the glass when taking it off!

Mine were bought from ebay back in May 2010.
I've trawled through my feedback and found the seller - but I notice they don't have a 6 LED white bulb anymore. They're all 9 bulb now - but I think they'd probably be too big as 6 LED was on the edge.

Ok thanks. I actually went and looked at a GTI today and it looks like the 9 LED bulbs would be too big -- shame! I'll order some 6 LED now.

Change mine tonight, pretty pleased with the look. Red LED in footwell and white LED on roof panel

very nice does look good!
-
I like that alot. Nice mod.
Something seedy about those red lights though!
-
Like it Kenny; VERY nice.
What white LEDs did you use, was there much clearance with the length of the bulbs in the enclosure?
Detritus.
-
Just got some off eBay a while ago. Cant remember what ones it is though. Any ones will do really. Its the 501 bulb type.
-
Just done my footwell lights. Bought white 501's from local car accessory shop at £4.50 for 2.
Passenger side bit fiddly to get enclosure out of footwell, then need a small flat head screwdriver to prise lens away from enclosure. Original bulb slides out easily, new bulb bit more awkward to re-fit as its a bit bigger, but does fit OK.
Driver's side more awkward. Need "star" screwdriver to release panel under dash, then light pulls out from panel the same as passenger side.
My LED's didnt work 1st time in; was advised to turn them around. Work perfectly now. Nice white/blue light shining.

After seeing Kenny's pics, might change again to red to match other cabin instrument lighting. Thanks for your tips Kenny.
-
No worries mate.
I prefer the red so it matches up with the drop light while driving at night.
Then you can move the footwell ones into the roof panel?
-
Looks smart Kenny!
and yeah Ash...personally would change to the red ones. would suit your little beast a lot more...
-
Changed mine last night lads.... though they would never come lord. very happy with them

Hey guys, i know this has been left for a while.. But i'm struggling to change the passenger side for the footwell lights. The driver's side was a doddle, but the passenger is the pain in my backside!
any tips? -I've even moved the fabric from behind the glove box to give a bit more room, but I can't get the damn connector off, is it just me and my fat fingers or did you guys struggled as well?
-
I gave up on my footwell lights as I just couldn't open the enclosures.
-
you mean the metal part? use a flat head screw driver and pry the sides up, dont be scared to bend them a little as they go back into shape pretty easy.
Did you manage to disconnect the passenger side though?
-
Yeah I could disconnect them no problem just couldn't get the bloody things open
-
 damn my fat fingersssssssssssss
-
Brute force!
-
done it now, and pretty happy with the results - the bulbs been pretty much my first mods; footwell and headlights
-
Hi guys I am probably overlooking the link here, but my wish is to use the red leds for the footwell...any adress where I can order would be welcome...I think I have to get the 501
-
Fleabay, there are loads I got five for £3.
-
Mines arrived this week. Going to change them this weekend. Went for white instead of red this time

Yep there do fine mate...but if you purchase from that link your only receive 1...there are plenty more out there for the same price but with bigger quantities...
-
Are you not better with the LED's on the side as this would produce more light?
-
Okay thanks, now I know what to order
-

Hi can you explain, I do not follow.
My goal is to have a red footwell on both sides
Edit...do you mean a multiple led...like 4 or 6 in one...?
Please advise...there are simply too much options
-
I'm going from memory here but I believe the footwell lights lie horizontal.
So if you plug a normal w5w led light in you will just be shining most of the light on to the end of the lights enclosure.
So you are looking for led's that are along the bulbs side as opposed to just the end in order for more light to be thrown out.
I'm sure someone will be along soon if I'm talking nonsense

So this one will fit and gives enough light....is this the one for most of us to get ?

I have replaced my footwell lights with standard red bulbs and they look great, no need for LEDs
