Title: started rebuild "MK2 2.0 8v Cammed and gasflowed GTi"
Post by: garethmarshall on 17 January 2012, 16:54
Hey Guys started the build a few days ago. my camera has broken and will be getting new one friday.

Well its not going to be done straight away and the build will be taking a while to complete due to work etc.

I am going to respray the car Jet Black with the alloys also Gloss Black. I want the car to be very low and just look sleek.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

thanks alot

Gareth

The only thing worth polishing is the rockercover. Easiest way to do it is take it to a polishers lol. If not theb your looking at ung a lot of elbow grece to  getvthat thing shining

take it all apart and paint, clean/polish or even replace everything

Thats exactly what I did to mine.

Get yourself 2.0lt 16v,  take your time and strip it down, see what parts you need.
Spend £20 on a can of Jizer and soak, scrub, everything you can.

When I got it on a pallet.

3 Months of stripping down, replacing gaskets, belts and stuff, DIY Airbox, Job done.  I didnt paint anything.  I used Autoglym bumper care to polish the rubbers and plastic!

Hope that gives you some ideas for your Mk2 :)

wow what an incentive. thanks alot mate :)

Yeah well i was looking for more the acceleration wise mate.

thought 8v's were better???

that looks immense gotta say.

did you polish all the bolts????

i know what jizer is lol. went on ebay ha

many thanks mate
Title: Re: started rebuild "MK2 2.0 8v Cammed and gasflowed GTi"
Post by: Pluginz on 18 January 2012, 15:39
Hehe thanks man.

Yeah I soaked most of the bolts and gave them the wire brush treatment, works out easier when trying to undo any in the future. :)

Before this I had the 8v with a Pack C TSR head.  This 2.0 16v is way way quicker all the way through the rev range and you just wait until you hit 5,000 rpm, it just starts spinning the wheels up until 7k,  super upgrade even in standard form.

Even the MPG is better, and no worrying about running 98 ron fuel either.

I know you may have already bought new parts for your 8v, but consider the ABF :)

yeah mate, well what will i need for the 16v conversion???

im really considering the 16v :)

if you dont mind me asking, whats the millage and the price u paid??

and as i said what will i need to get other than the engine??
new loom and ecu?

Ebay.
On the abf question, by a doner mk3 and a carrado pedal box. You will need to modify the pedal box slightly on the accelerator

Morning bud

I paid £350 for Engine, Box, Loom, ECU, I just had the ECU decoded as I already have an immobilser.   I did quite alot of research before I started and found out that with a basic swap you dont need the whole car,  plus it was a little easier for me.  Mileage on ABF was suppose to be 87,000!!

You can use quite alot of parts from your 8v engine too, thats if you dont have space for another car.  Use the 8v gearbox, 8v exhaust downpipe, you might what to get some mk2 16v engine mounts.  A mix and match of 8v/ABF engine and radiator hoses so you can use your old 8v radiator, you may aswell have black hoses with a black car :)

I have a list of all the parts I bought for my conversion, I will try and find it and let you know.

Hello again!

I found the list of bits.  I chopped it down from the original parts list as I bought many more parts and bits you may not need, but I can still add it if you want.   This basic list still came to almost £750!!  I spent double that though on mine,

Engine 16v         £ 350.00
Cambelt            £  17.50
Tensioner          £  27.08
Rocker cover gasket      £  25.54
Exhaust downpipe Gasket      £  10.30
Rear Gearbox mount      £  17.94
Front engine mount         £  14.40
16v Rear engine mount      £  25.00
16 Acc Cable         £  12.12
AntiFreeze         £  12.00
Oil x2            £  30.00
Oil filters x2         £  12.26
Clutch kit            £   5.47
Loom cloth wrap         £  10.00
Lambda boss welding      £  10.00
ECU decode         £  85.00
ADL airbox +K&N          £  25.00

                                     £ 747.61

Hehe yeah that bottom ball joint looks knackered, theyre cheap.

The cam clamp has just not been fitted by the looks, thats quite strange, did you run the engine like that?  Odd  :undecided:

I woudnt bother with that 8v geeze, just go for the 16v instead!

yeah i was shocked i didnt notice it before ha.

and i found it really odd, but the head does look like its been cutt etc, ill post more photos tomorrow closer detailed ones.

haha yeah well for all that its sound pretty good and for the bhp gain. but for 750 i might get a vr6?? but then we are talking about a big job arnt we???

thats me being very otta my zone. i really dont know loads like a mechanic but i wanted to do this to learn and learndd i have. i think mabye getting the 8v done and then sorting the 16v out or getting help with the vr6??
Title: Re: started rebuild "MK2 2.0 8v Cammed and gasflowed GTi"
Post by: Pluginz on 19 January 2012, 20:27
Maybe out of your zone for now then.  But if you are going to learn about it all, it may aswell be the ABF.

Take 8v out and start stripping it down, see how much of a pain in the arse everything is to take apart. Keep all the parts for now.  You will learn alot just by doing that.

Then go for the ABF as I said. Strip down the same.  You will then notice how much better the design is and Its way easier to maintain, repair and run, seems light years ahead compared to my old Digifant.  You wont look back bud.

Hey Gareth, I notice you had £80 next to demobilize the ECU. If the ECU is from an OBD1/2 you can use the full version of VAG.COM to do this from my understanding? Anyone local have it, might save yourself some pennies.
