Title: a lonely footwell light
Post by: jakester on 16 January 2012, 23:16
Evening all,  my 1st 'real' post since purchasing the GTi and the introduction.  I've been messing with the car over the past week (nav unit, rear camera etc) and noticed I only have a footwell light on the passenger side (under the dash) but not one on the drivers side (I assume it sits behind the OBC plug?)  Is this correct? :undecided:
Apologies of this has already been covered...

No, you should have one on the driver's side as well.

Ahh! I wonder where that's gone then?  I mean, some people keep something back when they sell a car (in the GTi case it's usually the bottle opener) but to take a lamp seems a little extreme!
I'll have another hunt in the morning (I can't remember removing it - then again, age is cruel...and a lousy beautician!)

Thanks for the quick reply

There is a light behind the OBC socket. To remove it, to change the bulb, you need to push the light unit down towards the floor to release it from the frame it sits in. Then just untwist the bulb holder out. It's a 501 type bulb.

probably just a bulb blown or something

change them for some red ones while your at it. look great in red as it matches the ambient roof lights etc

So, after removing the OBC bracket and delving behind the bonnet release trim I managed to retrieve the wires for the elusive light.  No sign of the light whatsoever!  Absolutely baffled as to why.

I can add the boot light for now as it's easier to replace.

So there is not light unit or holder? Just wires?

Yep.  The wires were tucked away as though there has never been a light fitted.

The only replacement ones I can find on ebay are LED units (at £20)

Anyone have a light they no longer want?

Maybe a silly question, but is taking it back to dealers under warranty not an option...?

They would probably hunt you unless you got on with them and a regular customer. Any chance of a picture? Sounds very weird. Maybe contact previous owner???

Having bought the car 200 miles away I think it's a bit of a faff trying to get the dealer to replace the lamp (although something that hadn't crossed my mind).  I'll just buy another from VW parts.

Still baffling as to why it's missing.  No point with a pic as all you'd see is a blank hole behind the OBC and a [retrieved] dangling wire.  Not the most interesting of pics

Thanks for the responses chaps - much appreciated (as a newbie here)

(if it turns up under heavy breaking I'll let you know!)
