Title: Tyres and things
Post by: VW Russ on 16 January 2012, 22:01
Evening all,

Bit of advice if you would be so kind?

I've just had a good luck at my tyres (obviously had far too much time on my hands..) and have noticed that both offside (drivers side) tyres are getting very low, the front is worse than the rear. The car is a GTI and has Monza 18's on it. The nearside tyres are fine however, I've only owned the car a couple of months and it's done 64k.

Now, I have no problems paying for two new tyres as I new this was coming when I bought the car but but ideally I don't want to buy two tyres just for one side as I don't think it's very wise in terms of handling etc but am I just talking rubbish? Is it perfectly ok to buy new tyres just for the front and read on one side? I will try and get the same Dunlop Sport as are already on there.

Could I please have your thoughts?

many thanks

Always replace in pairs

I'd also get your tracking checked out thoroughly as there must be a reason why the tyres have only worn on the one side  :undecided:

What you could do is take the one from the back and put on the front and then replace both the rear tyres

Thanks Rhyso,

I agree with the swap in pairs. I was thinking that the tyres were directional but now thinking about it I can move one of the fronts to the rear and replace both fronts ok?

What do we think, £200 for two tyres? Any mid range recommendations?

At that price i'd get 2 x Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta's

And you think it's ok to have two different makes front and back?

Perfectly fine; I'm running two different sets on mine on my winter wheels and was on my 18's.

Although a complete set of Vredestein's will be going on my 18's this year

Vredestein are brilliant tyres and are at a very competitive price. At some point this year Ill need some new ones on the front and am still struggling to decide weather to get the Vredestein or stick with the Goodyear Eagle F1s at I have on atm.

I have a sneaky feeling my wallet at the time will dictate which ones I go for :(

£200 for vreds??? Eage F1s on the front after 24000 and the just cost £280 and that was cheap. Forgot bout csmskills. And if putting new on I always go for front. But people say the rear so the grip stops the oversteer...ie more likely to under steer which is more controllable and predictable.

I saw some Vreds on Ebay last night for £201 per corner and free delivery, think I will be ordering two tomorrow when paid. Along with new wiper blades and rear pads and tax and parking permit and ...

It never rains but pours, eh....

.........i had the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta on my ED 30 but just chaged all 4 for Conti sport 3. Much better than the Vreds, better ride quality & not as much road noise.

Well ordered my 18" vreds of fleabay last night, £202 inc delivery which I don't think is too bad at all. I actually heard mixed things re these and the contacts, some people said the contacts were actually more noisy then the vreds and I see someone else on this post said the other way round??

Oh well, will report my findings...

Goodyears are noisy. But good. Always trade offs with these things

Just had the Vreds fitted, too early to tell what their like but I have to say, the steering is much sharper. I drove a few gti's before I settled on this one and always thought they felt a little better in the steering dept than mine, until now.. Can tyres make that much difference?

i think I need the tracking looking it too so well get that done soon too.

Yes tyres can. They are only thing that's in contact with the road

Hi Chaps

I havnt been on here for ages but unforunately it is time to spend some money on my MK5

So a couple of weeks ago it went in for its 70k service and i decided to get the major service done as it hadnt seen the garage for 2 years .

On the report it came back that the rear tyres need changing. Looking at the tyres they have worn mostly on the inside. Is this normal?

Also I seem to have quite a bit of road noise from them at about 30-40mph.

On the front I have Goodyear Eagle F1 Assms and they seem to be ok.

My question is whether to stick with these or go to Michellins

Your advice is more than welcome.

T

If your happy with the F1s stick with them. Im on my 3rd set now.

Stick with F1s as they are good but beware they are noisy. The other thing is the camber may be out on the rear by the sounds of that. Or you drive damn quick over those sh1tty small speed bumps.

Tyres are all in the mind.  Just think you have the best, learn to use the thottle correctly for the chosen tyres, and bob's your uncle, top tyre tastic.

Jeez what garbage. I have a Mkv Gti and when I bought it, it had Falken F452's. They're supposedly a good midrange tyre and yet by comparison to my Avon ZZ3's, they're utter garbage and only £15 cheaper per corner. They turned to plastic under 10c, suffered from a horrible rumble at motorway speed and offered limited to no feedback in the wet.

Don't listen to egg wash, your tyres are your only point of contact with the road. Invest wisely, it's worth it.
