How real is the 55L fuel tank capacity?
54.06L put in at the pump on Saturday....
...Wants to see top trumps!
Important to know when your hyper-mileing with no sight of fuel.
-
With the light on and the MFD telling me there is zero kms range left in the tank, the most I've managed to get into it is 53 or maybe very slightly above it.
-
55L is pretty close I've had it showing 0 miles left for a couple of miles and I could only get 54L to brim it.
You will notice when the fuel light comes on and it says 50 miles left it drops like a stone.
You will also notice when you tank it you can do 80 miles before it moves of the full mark so the gauge isn't proportional.

Pretty much every car I've owned is the same. The last quarter of the tank seems to empty much quicker than the first 3 quarters!
-
Well this is the first car that I've noticed doing that.

there is a small article in this months evo where the bloke with a long term test polo gti managed to squeeze 10 extra litres in as there is room for expansion in the tank which doesn't usually get filled but somehow he managed to fill it and it screwed up his MFD for a while.

I have defo had more that 55 in the golf also... but this was when I got it back from VW, it was stuttering as I pulled onto the forecourt!!
-
Lol Keith I found that out last week showed 40+ to empty done about 20 and was in urgent need of fuel. How many miles can you do on zero miles??

Well I don't let it get to zero normally this was last summer I had been out and I was coming back home via the fuel station then I thought s**t I need some petrol for the mower so I went home to get the can. As I stopped it said 25 miles left I got the can and started up again and it said 5 miles left how can it loose 20 miles sitting in the drive? I drove to the fuel station 1/4 mile up the road it showed 0 miles so I carried on for 3 miles so these electronic gizmos are just kidding you.

This golf is the first car that I've ever had with a linear fuel tank!
Within a few miles it starts going down - and is a gradual process until it's empty. I say empty - but I generally don't let it get under 1/8th before refilling it.
All my last cars have let me do about 70miles before the needle even moves! I thought my dealer had underfilled the "free tank of petrol" when I collected it from new as my fuel gauge moved after a couple of miles!

Ha ... I think they all do that to some degree  ... I'm pretty sure it tries to calculate the mileage left from the current / recent mpg.
For example if I fill up full near a motorway, drive gently and cruise at 58mph, my range (miles left) is around 360 miles
Next morning, I start her up in the cold and drive to work (with a cold engine) and it will drop dramatically to 260 miles left
Technically I guess they were both correct(ish) given the different conditiions and driving styles ?
