Title: Time to put Opinions to bed?
Post by: Jimmymature on 14 January 2012, 14:29

What I'd love is for a professional with rolling road facilities to test the performance benefits of a performance panel filter.  Lots of people have an opinion on them that they're are a complete waste of money. But I'd like to see the facts!

How about, Doc or R-Tech do a test and tell us the true RR results?

How about it gents?

Cheers,

Jim

I don't know anyone else who has thousands and thousands of pounds worth rolling road.

Don't suppose you do do you?

Jim

well you can do it at home if you have logging equipment.....just log the values coming in from the MAF.  They are usually pretty accurate withing 1-2bhp either way.

Not easy to repeat figures time after time on the road tbh.

Jimmy it's only 200 miles and you'll have a laugh, get in yer car.

:) would lvoe to take up a offer of a dyno for a day...

TEst a few things...NA Inlet cam for one and filters etc, N75 valves the lot...

Having no car at the minute doesnt help and a lack of funds to test for a day :(

I'd like to see the effects of the NA cams as they seem like hot cake on all the european tuner forum's. Also with NA cams, how many degree's and same for stock 1.8t cams?

Second question, with NA cams in place for the me7.5 boys would VVT have to be disabled as these are hard cam's or would you be able to still use VVT in effect?

If you'd like to organise a day here I'll show you the ropes and you can crack on FOC but you'll need to be quick as were booked up from 6th Feb for four months  but

Damn, thats a good offer.

As I said above, im fairly stuck at the minute.

Great to see people lending the use of their dyno to aid knowledge of particular engine

Its not just about peak dyno numbers when testing,

I am tyring to find Tophers thread when we tested the Pipercross venom kit, the peak numbers where poor but the logs told another storey.

Its not an easy question to answer.

Modern cars are load based ecus which in short mean once the car see the correct amout of air flow to produce stock power the ecu will cut back throttle angle, timing and load request.  But then we have a stock R32, remove the air box and just run with the maf and you will see 12bhp gain on the peak power, and around 6bhp with a panel filter.  NA cars get the best gains from filters.

An LCR BAM stock air box and Pipercross filter is limited to 247bhp at which point the airbox and filter becomes a restriction.

The BMC induction kit on a 1.8T can only flow upto 213bhp tops, just by taking the BMC off and adding a cone filter you can find 15bhp.

A stage-1 AUM can gain around 4-5bhp on peak power with a Pipercross panel filter

A civic type-R will get an extra 14bhp at points on a dyno graph with an k&n induction kit.

Some TDIs lose peak power with filters.

Thanks Nick, a very useful reply.

Wouldnt bother....They slow...would much rather have a k03 golf!

My 225bhp mapped k03s pushed a turbo one along pretty damn easy

Until the MAF or N75 Valve or Boost/Vacuum Leaks or PCV system or Coil Packs cause it to break

Im sure civics have their fair share of issues aswell?

Apart from a time of where the car at shafts.  ive never had any issues with mine.  New MAF, N75 valve and blanked PCV system and not one issue.  I think I had 1 boost pipe blow off and thats it.

Remember, parts on golfs are aging now, so ideally they need replacing....not many people spend the money getting things perfect and safe for another good few years!

Especially when the entire vacuum system can easily be replaced diy style for under £35, plus its the AUM's that seem to be the continuous lemons in reliability, my AGU just keeps going from strength to strength even though it keep raping it from cold etc... Just keep it well serviced and it stays happy, but for the age of the car I've not had much wrong with it.

Got no torque, to have fun you need to be banging off the limiter...

Its one thing I havent come across yet.....a stock CTR.  A turbo one yes and pushed it along.   Zafira VXR was a doddle aswell.  Big turbo stripped out C20let engine'd nova without a full remap on got its bottom handed aswell.  Although I did get done by a old V8 merc AMG thingy on a L reg or summit on the top end, neck and neck midrange.
Wish it was still going to give mates uprated supercharged G60 mk1 a little run along the road :(

What is neck midrange?

cars were neck and neck (ie level) through midrange speed.
