Hi all,
First off i know its not a mk4 but i have a mk4 so i hope this is ok  so here goes,
Just fitted new wheels to my wifes 1 series and posted a pic up on babybmw.net and all i got were replys saying they were illegal and would fail an mot so i thought i would post up and ask on here as I prefer this site to the "oh my god you didnt fit oem wheels on your bmw! your cars shi*e" brigade over there, lol.
heres the pics

so is it illegal???
cheers

I'd say just about.. i run 15mm spacers on my rear Mk4 and they sit flush with my rear arches which is boarder line
-
Look illegal to me, they protrude from the wheel arch buy a few mm.
-
I'd say they were probably technically illegal. However they're such a small amount out, it'd take a real anal **** to make a fuss about them.
-
Umm completely legal isn't it?
Aslong as the tread of the tyre is under arch, regardless of how ever far you can poke the rim out, it is still legal?
Pretty damn sure thats right?
-

Don't MOT it at ATS then!
Advisories I got recently include:
Child seat fitted to the rear
Car is lowered
-
Does the wheel or the tyre tread protrude?
If its the top of the tyre its illegal
Also moving this to off topic
-
from the front it looks like stretch so no tread protruding
-
Tiny bit of camber and you'll be fine
-
no worse than some people on here run, you'll be fine
-
Nothing wrong with abit of poke
Mines passed an mot everytime nothing said, Iv been pulled over by the police and all they say is nice wheels haha
-
Legal, dont worry about it! take it for an MOT and the tester may fail or advise just to cover himself, iirc there is no guideline for this on MOT test, but get pulled by the Police, then thats a different matter...

Not sure if it's a new thing but some garages advise on anything non standard.

re: MOT.
"PROTRUDING WHEELS
I have recently purchased a set of alloy wheels from [a retailer] for my Ford Focus ST170 [who in turn fitted them to my car].
They appeared to be look a wider fitment than the original standard wheel even though they were the same size, 215/45/17, and were visibly protruding beyond the wheel arch on the front by approximately 5-6mm. They have also been catching the wheel arches on the front when going over speed ramps or bigger bumps in the road.
A local MOT Testing Station could not clarify whether this protrusion was classed as illegal so I would hope you could provide clarification? Steven Jewitt
As I understand the situation the only way the MOT is affected is if your new wheels actually foul the bodywork or any other part of the vehicle when the wheels are turned lock to lock when the vehicle is sitting in its normal position."

That is an interesting thread and site Elvi

No idea if its legal but it looks nice. What wheels are they?
Nice bit of camber and you missus will have a lovely stance
-
A quick look around, and at the relevant law:
http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1996/3013/schedule/2/made
I would say that as long as the tyre is under the arch, the wheel can be protruding NO MORE than 30mm
from the vertical plane of the car.
2. There shall be no other feature on the external surface of the vehicle likely to increase the risk or seriousness of injury to any person who could come into contact with the vehicle. Without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing, the radius of curvature of all hard parts protruding from this external surface which can be contacted by a sphere of 100 mm diameter, shall be not less than 2.5 mm
The second sentence of paragraph 2 shall not apply to—
(d)wheels, if there are no pointed or sharp features which projects beyond the external plane of the wheel rim, no wing nuts are fitted and there are no projections beyond the vehicle body plan form apart from tyres and wheel discs, if the latter have a radius of curvature of not less than 30 mm and do not project by more than 30 mm beyond the vehicle body plan form;
-
I believe that as long as the tyre tread is inside the arch it is legal, someone once said to me that the original reason people started stretchIng tyres was to fit wider wheels.
Dunno big this is completely true but makes sense
-
Yep, as others have said it only has to be the tread within the arch

18" LM's (reps)
-
As elvi said - thought you were allowed 30mm of poke?
-
Totally legal as the tread is covered by the arch. I doubt it would ever rub at that hight so it's fine.
-
Doesn't matter what wheels are fitted to that BMW - it's still so f*cking ugly it should be illegal as a whole.
When BMW drove that design through the ugly store they picked up every special offer.
Wheels look fine. Tell the arrogant moron BMW owners to shut the F up.

Car is lowered, that was an advisory?

A mate of mine with a mk2 jetta had 8s on it, which protruded (metal only, not tread). He got pulled for it and the police said "They need to come off, they're too dangerous. The protrusion means a pedestrian's scarf could get caught on the wheel"

The had me in the back of the X5 whilst we argued that i was right (rim allowed to protude and tyre wasnt)
All whilst his mate took photos and sent them the the "experts".... Long story short the expert said i was right but i needed mudflaps andc got a £60 fine  all depends on the copper
