Hi ive recently got my first gti turbo. Now and again it starts to smoke and smells abit oily other times its fine, has any 1 experienced this before or do they no what it is and is it costly to sort out any help is appreciated
-
taking it as its a mk4? could be a number of problems. worse case could be the turbo but depends on what colour the smoke is and how bad it is and when it happens. could also need a service, hook it up to vag-com and check for errors
-
As said could be turbo seals - or somthing as simple as too much oil in it

Valve stem oil seals!?
apparently these are very common to go on the 1.8t :undecided:
mines smokes a bit on first initial start up and was advised thats what it was

thanks for the help ill get it serviced first off. It still pulls like a train so hopefully not the turbo

valve stem seals, had this on my first one. leave it running up to temperature on tickover, when up to temperature rev it, if you got a load of oil clear itself out the exhaust its you stem seals. if it doesnt do it when booting it constantly whilst driving, thats because its contantly clearing it out, and its not having chance to have leaking oil build up. i'm guessing it does it if your at traffic lights for a while, or parked up with engine running, then you drive off and it dumps a load of smoke, but then clears eventually.

did it cost much to get done

What colour is the smoke, blue is a sign it is oil
