i took the misses to blackpool for a night on friday, came back last night. anyway, i floored it on a straight stretch  and manage to it up to just under 120 ( might have been about 117). Just wanted to know if that is the normal top speed for standard 8v gti 97 and what top speed everyone else had.
Thanks

book speed says about 120-125 but those figures are always under special conditions, v little fuel, one person and ideal weather.
-
i have had 128 out of mine but i don't think to top speed counts for much on the roads nowadays there are very few places where you can get away with it more than a few times before accruing points and a ban seems to me to be low down where you need the power and whilst the mk3 8v aint no traffic light racer it still does the job more power low down is the way to go is it not..?
-
totally. thats what i love about mine.
-
Got 120 out of mine before sh!tting myself incase old plod saw me and said "thank you very much for your licence son!"
-
I got to 105, then i couldn't stand the noise and vibrations, sounded like the Shuttle re-entering the orbit. The speedo was moving pretty slow by then.

I agree with count....got 122 out of mine and it was probably from about 115 that it began to slow

I've had 125 out of mine on the speedo but the Origin B2 didn't match up with the speedo.
There were no vibrationons or pulling left to right on mine as I recently changed the bottom ball-joints, trackrod ends and top mounts, not to mention new wheels, tires and a balance and track.

Your speedo is never accurate anyways... "speedo may read 10% under actual speed minus 2mph and never read over" according EEC 39
-
I slip streamed my VR6 for 8 miles in my 2.0 GTI and both read 126mph when the GTI was screeming its little heart out and gave up the chase.
-
You must all need the cobwebs blowing out of yours, ive had 135 out of mine with my mates VR6 behind me to verify it. (we were on private road by the way)
-
135mph in a mk3 golf 8v?? thats good going....
-
Sure
-
I've had my standard MKII 8v pff the clock (120mph)!!!!
-
135
no offence but surely not, unless its got mega mods etc!!!
-
135 , last time i did that type of speed i was in a renault 19 16v and a corolla gti 1.6
-
I had 129mph on a autobahn a couple of years ago. That was on a flat road, no slip stream absolutely flat out.
However, recently I callibrated 100mph to be approx 89mph in reality (as per accurate GPS) so 130 is probs about 117 which seems about right to me for a lowish powered hatch
-
mine goes off the clocks then 10 seconds later i nose dive :S gps says 123mph in a mk2 8v strange tho my poor excuse for a vectra 1.6 16v does 130+ i didnt go over that cause i hit a cats eye and i bottled it but it had abit more in it
-
135mph out of an 8v? you have a faulty speedo my friend

Or he is blind and cannot see the dash

I had 127mph on my garmin quest gps but my speedo was off the clock well over 10mph out
-
I used to have a mk 3 1.8GL (74 bhp) that once indicated 122mph. I gps'ed it once at 114mph when it was indicating 118, so 122 must have been about 117/118 in reality. With another 40bhp the 8v GTi must be capable of about 125-130mph I guess. My 16v mk 3 GTi has indicated 145mph a couple of times and been gps'ed at 139mph, but takes a long time to get there. If you really want to find out your cars top speed you need an empty motorway in the early hours of the morning, a gps and to be prepared not to take your foot of the floor until you're absolutely sure it ain't going to go any faster. And you've got to accept the risk to your licence, of course.

Got just under 130mph (on the speedo) on 2L 8v just a few airbox mods. Over indicated 100 mph it does accelerate very slow. Much safer to speed on the bike, up and back down in no time. Seen 170mph on speedo on the bike before running out of road.

well mine aint standard but bits a got on shudnt make much difference like, got a k&n 57i induction kit, scorpion cat back exhaust,n ave had 131 out ov it,just wud not go any faster
-
130 out of mine plenty of times (late night sun night test track ) mods= piper cross a/filter full stainless minus cat, probally wasn't true 130 but it gets there eventually
