Title: lock barrels...
Post by: gizago on 11 January 2012, 20:14
My mk2 has handles from a mk3 fitted, which I'm not a fan of. I've got a set of mk2 handles to replace them with, but can I remove the lock barrels from the mk3 handles and fit them to the mk2's?? Would like to keep the car all on one key, and can't face rebuilding the locks/tumblers. Cheers, Mat.

When I had my old Mk2, I had a 4 different keys for it, so I dropped all of the tumblers out of the door and boot locks, so that the ignition key would fit everywhere. Thing is, so would any key, or knife, or spoon handle. I guess I figured no one would ever try that.

Is that why you don't have it any more?
Some bloke walking down the road with a spoon thought he'd try his luck?

No, but I often wonder if the bloke that bought it ever realised.

its not difficult to rebuild the barrel to match your key. You may need a few lock barrels to make sure you have enough of each tumbler.

I dont know if the mk3 barrels will fit, but there are only about three screws to remove to have the lock barrel in your hand, so whip em off and try it in your mk2 handle

They look VERY similar, wouldnt be at all suprised that they were the same.

N/S barrel has fallen out of the mk3 handle now  :undecided:

Did it this morning, took all of about 5 minutes, 1 screw on the back and a spring, simple

Yip. Although I suspect the barrels were originally from the car anyway, as the ignition and tailgate locks match, so I think someone has fitted the (sh!t) mk3 handles with the original mk2 barrels.
