I'm sure I read something about this a couple of months ago - but the search came back with nothing.
Anyway... for the last 18months+ I've had a set of LED numberplate bulbs fitted - which emit nice white crisp light. It's great for the RVC as it lights up the road behind you!
They were bought from eBay Hong Kong or similar, and cost about £30 for the pair. The were the usual bulb holder filled with about 18 SMD LED's and then a small adapter box which tricked the MFD into not giving an error.
No problems apart from the occasional MFD warning if my lights went on, off and back on again during a journey - I would get the warning light on the dash. When I switched the ignition off and on again, the warning would vanish for another few months!
Today I was driving to work and the warning came on. A bit odd as it was dark and my lights had been on the whole time. When I got to work, I looked at the lights - and one was flickering. I meant to go out and look once it got light, but totally forgot until I got in the car to drive home again... in the dark.
When I got home, I put on my head torch, and pinged the bulb holder out. One of the 18 LED's was on, and the others were all flickering. I fiddled with it for a few minutes, but since it was dark and freezing, I removed the pair of them and put the originals back in.... which look really orange and dull now!
So... I want another set of LED bulbs. I've found more on eBay - which look much like the ones I've just taken out. My box (which I kept the originals in) said "Racing Dash" on it, and I think the eBay ones for about £30 again are the same thing.
I'm sure I read something about OEM LED bulbs a while back though. Are there better ones out there than the ones I had? Are they a stright swap? Where can I get them?!
-
Here's one source for the original ones; you may want to just take the part number frmo the pic though and see if local dearler is competetive on price?

Thanks...
I see the connectors look the same as the ones on my car already - but do they work straight out of the box - or need some jiggery pokery?!
-
If you fit the OEM ones that are fitted to later GTI's/R's you'll need something like these.

I own a mk6 gti,dsg front fairy led and rear led but wanted led number plate lamps.I ended up getting some from convert2xeon and cost£36.The good thing is you get a resistor module with them so no faults. They been in since August and finish off the rear lighting a treat.
-
Does anybody think these will work?

-
Mate, they look identical to the ones I got from convert2xeon except they are £10 cheaper.I can only say where I got mine from are a reputable company and for the extra £10 they cost, they do work and can be fitted by a novice like me in no time.
-
Thanks for the replies...
The OEM ones price is a bit off-putting if I need the Kufatec adapters as well as the £25 each bulbs.
The ones from convert2xenon look to be the same or similar to the ones I already have - which also look much the same as the eBay ones.
I guess it'll just have to be another set of them. At least I have a spare incase of another failure!
-
I have the OEM ones along with the Kufatec adapters as linked to above. Fitted them about 3 months ago and they've worked perfectly. No dash bulb-out errors.
They weren't cheap, when you factor in the adapters, but they work!
-
They are a US based company so you might pay more on shipping but these are the best I have ever heard, and are recommended by many people who have them:
http://www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-Golf_VI--2.0T/Lighting/View_All/ES2093774/
Complete plug and play, the part number is the same for the MK6 GTI/Golf 2.5/TDI. Just checked the shipping, and it is kind of steep. For me atleast 73 pounds shipped. Might be able to take the MFG # and run an inquiry on ebay.co.uk and see what you come up with. Just wanted to recommend something that I know works and is reliable.

Whats the part no. of the OEM LED number plate light to go along with these....?

Kufatec sell the bulbs as well, around the same price as VW i think.

I assume these lights don't need codding in?
-
I think putting the adapter/resistors in means they don't need coding, i wouldn't mind someone confirming that though.
-
Just found these swell from looking on other forums
https://www.dectane.de/LED-license-plate-illumination/LED-License-Plate-VW-Golf-Vl-Polo-Scirocco---Skoda.html
Looks like they come with the resister already built in.
-
Jimble is correct. If the resistors are fitted no coding is required. Not for mine anyway.Plug and go.

Andy - do you have any pics of yours? Just want to see how brits they are.
-
James,I am new to site and using iPad/iPhone due to knackered laptop.I have not worked out how to upload pics from iPad.If you can send me a personal email I will get pic to you and you can post it no probs. If anybody knows how to do pics via iPad let me know.

Download the photobucket app mate, works a treat! You do need an account mind..
-
The ecstuning ones and the dectane ones are pretty much identical to the ones I already have - with the 18odd LED's and a separate resistor box that you have to tuck into the bumper.
Whats different in the 2012 MK6 that it can take those LED bulbs without needing a resistor box?
Is it coding - or something else?

Thanks for the advice about photobucket, got a bit carried away with pics. The first pic is at VW Bolton before we took delivery.Incidently this week had the clip fitted on the exhaust/resinator to fix the whispy noise between 2000rpm and 3000rpm.Many thanks to this forum for making me aware that this problem can be sorted under warranty as dealer unsure till i showed him the forum right up.

Nice rear.... the light funnily enough looks crisp and white but with a blue tint?
It's convinced me to go and buy one.
I just need to figure out which ones to go for..... Dectane, ECS Tuning, Kufatec or the convert2xenon ones?
-

How long have you had these ones Andy? Have they been error free?
-
They been in since mid August.Error free. There is what they call a canbus which is a resistor module that stops any errors and comes with the lights. You just place it into bumper before putting led light in.

From reading AndyG's posts I understand his had no problems with them. So for £38-72 I thought they were worth a punt. I shall soon find out

The CanBus is the electrical system that is in the Golf, and many other cars nowadays. It allows the car to communicate with the electronic devices in the car. The resistor box you have makes the LED lights CanBus compatible by tricking the car into thinking the LED lights have the correct resistance... as LED bulbs use much less power / current than regular bulbs.

Just fitted them
They are much whiter and brighter than the standard lights and there have been no bulb error issues (so fingers crossed).
A 2 minute job to fit as well. The actual light fitting housings feel a better quality than the standard ones and fit perfectly.
I'm really pleased with them.
I'll try and post a nightime picture later so they can be seen in there full glory

Whats the Site you bought from in the end. Can you post me the link again have to get these. Look very well
Thanks
-
Thanks Martin may just have to get a set and see how I go - wouldn't want to break my finger nails
-
They're dead easy to get in and out Gizzy, best bet is to try taking your current ones out and back in, they fit in the bumper just like the battery cover on the back of a tv remote, and then it's a 1/4 turn to get the lamp/bulb carrier off, simples!

No bulb out errors then? The set I had gave me it everytime I started the car! although your ones look a bit different.

Has someone squashed your car!?

I was just wondering if anyone had any pics of the oem ones as a comparison for brightness and look.

The difference is night and day, the LED lights are much whiter and crisper. I should have taken a picture for comparison.

Just got a set of number plate lights from www.convert2xenon.co.uk has anyone had any problems with bulb warning lights on the dash ?
-
No prob's or errors with mine.

My warning light has now went out and had no problems with them since. Makes a huge difference to the look of the car.
