Just found this info on another forum - http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repository/MoT%20-%20Issue%2050%20-%20May%202011.pdf
This covers New MOT regulations that have come into force on the 1st of Jan 2012...
It also covers one of my pet Hates which is HID's on Cars like MK2's..... :smug:
They will be a failure unless you have Headlamp washers - Some are also suggesting that they could be a failure even without washers due to them being inappropriate for the standard lamps on a MK2.....
-
Headlamp washers and electric height adjustment I read? Thats us in the clear then :nerd:
HID's do look crap on old motors though and need to be rhd projectors headlights.
Ohh and it's who you know

LOL
My Tester is great just looks it over - quick brake test and once over (with me helping him) and it's a pass!!! :smug:
-
The way I read it is that they will only be a failure if washers and/or self-levelling are fitted but are faulty, not that they have to be present
-
Better connect mine up then
-
Thats not what I understand...
Page 9
Headlamp cleaning and
self‑levelling if high‑intensity
discharge (HID) lamps are
fitted
If you have HID's You MUST have washers - Just like the rest of Europe and they have to work...
Mr Blue... No worries unless you have HID's :undecided:

Yeah there seems to be some debate even on the MOT testers forum!

Typical - More Confusion....

Aside from posting in here about something which has been discussed several times on other sections of this forum, I still think this is mostly nonsense, in a couple of respects:
1. HIDs must be fitted in units designed for use with HIDs, with the unit E-marked as such
2. the washers and SELF (as in automatic) levelling functions are specified in UK law, not EU law. As such (as with most MOT items) they only have to work if they are fitted. EU law overrides the UK legislation on this and it does not specify washers and levelling.
Oh and people running HIDs in units designed for a bulb are a*seholes.

Sorry Don't venture out of here much!

Couldn't Agree More!!

Yeah there's no doubt about that one!
-
Sorry if this is turning into a HID hate thread but do you notice people who retro fit HIDs drive about with them on all the time?
Misaligned and badly fitted HIDs annoy me.

Invest in an uprated loom and Nightbreaker bulbs....

No point umming and arring over HID's... If your car came fitted with them from the factory then great, if not, buy a new car if you want them that badly.

Can we use this as the Stock one post reply to any future HID threads.
PLEASE.

 I was actually sad enough once to consider having a word doc with some generic replies for times like these! Need one for "what's my car worth?" too. In fact, thinking about it there's probably loads we could do with.

On the original topic, I'd reckon the change that'll snare the most people is for non-functioning clocks, speedos, and warning lights. Mind you, mine would also fail because you can't open one of the rear doors from the outside
-
The rear doors on my Syncro could be an issue on the opening from the inside, as they're released by sticking a finger through a hole in the back of the door at the moment.
I feel more baler twine may be needed.

Save your pikey fixes for the mk3.

Oi, it's lightweight racing baler twine!
Porsche used something similar on their lightweight specials (although they used poncey, heavy leather straps):
