Title: Best way to send money
Post by: Khare on 09 January 2012, 16:38
I might need to send around £700 for an item. Apart from paypal, (I want to avoid), what other payment method offers buyer protection and doesn't charge commission (on the sellers side, rather put £4 or £5 extra on my side). Post office? Bank transfer?

here or abroad?

if here,id send it by royal mail special delivery, pay the extra insurance and your covered both with a signature so you know they got it,and cover in the highly unlikely event it 'disapears' en-route.for that sort of £'s,its worth the extra cost to cover yerself imho

Yes it's within UK. It's a kart engine with exhaust and a few other bits and bobs, not sure royal mail will cover such large items. I was thinking paisly freight, or similar.

how far away from were you live is it? would it be cheeper to go and pay in cash and pick up rather than paying to get the money there safely then paying to get the engine etc. delivered? or are you still out of the uk?

Back in the UK now. Engine is in Leicester and I'm in Bournemouth, 160 miles more or less. I think I might just go pick it up  :undecided:

Bmouth to Leicester I say is a worth while trip rather than sending £700 squids. Also you could check out the item, if it isn't up to what you expect then you can walk away...

Yeah that's the advantage of picking stuff up yourself. Gonna do it, pick it up myself. Just waiting to hear from the guy now as there's a guy supposed to be picking it up tomorrow, but he hasn't heard from him...

Just reading this makes me think we could start up a thing where people collect bits for other peeps if theyre passing.

Like on Club80-90 they have the 80-90 express!

It wouldn't be a bad shout tbh. The only problem is trusting people, and trust is something that nowadays is hard to achieve.

Right then, picking it up tomorrow.

So, which route?

I'm thinking A34 to avoid motorway chaos and shorten the mileage.

I'd make you right on that.
If you go on the M1 there's a few average speed sections, there's a big one from J10 to J13 IIRC which you'd go straight through.
Plus motorway driving is tedious.

personally i'd be pissed if i drove 160 miles and the goods were no good. make sure everything is exactly as described before setting off.

Yup, me too, hence why I've confirmed with the seller everything that's included in the sale. He's sold it as ready to run, so if I get there and there's stuff missing/broken I'll be walking away and most likely putting a brick through his window.
