Hi all, I have took my 16v off the road,
I just had sum blokes pop around from a body shop,
They quoted me 800 quid,
Thats 2 totally strip all car down, all trim off,
Refit a new door and a new wing i have in shed,
Lead line all rear corners wear they rusted through,
Redo my petrol panel where that all gone,
And sort all dents and scratches out
-
Sound too cheap. Are they from a personal recommendation, or from the Yellow pages.
Ask Thom89 for a rough idea on price.
-
Its my mate from school, I told em 2 keep it aslong as they like, Cause i dont want it back until its bang on,
And they agreed with that,
-
Ah. Well if its Mates Rates and you regard his work of the highest quality, then go ahead.
Don't forget to post up some pics of his work.
-
I will do mate, He gonna take it in about 3 weeks as they just movin 2 a bigger unit,
I will get sum shots of the bad rust an stuff b4 aswell,
-
That sounds fine mate, i have a friend who had a MK1 fully stripped and re srayed for 1K for the same job about 1 year ago, so if your happy crack on, hope it all goes well pal
-
Mine cost me 2K (£1.6K first for all body panels exc roof and bumpers & then £400.00 for the roof & bumpers last year)...
£800.00 sounds a mega deal subject to the quality of work...
-
I was gunna strip all the trim an stuff off myself,
But the bloke reckons he would rather do it so he knows how it goes off an back on again.
-
Be very careful how you tread with the price, and how long it will take! £800 leaves no incentive for your mate to finish the job, especially if he's had it for a long time.. for that price you need to put in force something that gets you the car back within 10 days, or expect the whole deal to go tits up, and you lose a mate!
A Mk2 Ive just painted, the £800 at you talk of doesn't even come close to what has been spent on paint, materials. sundry items and a new OE wing, let alone labour etc, good bodywork is horrendously expensive!

a agree with thom here.
if i had an £800 respray job to do it would proaby sit outside the workshop for a very long time and i'm not even a pro painter. also leading is a bit of a lost art now there are people who are good at it tho but doing it right dosent happen fast.
but here's how i'd brake down a bargain basement respray as i did the birds car and it's scary how the costs mount up.
Paint as in , primer seal, high build primer, base coat, laquer, thinners, pannel wipe, and degreasants = £350 being tight.
then there is £50 in filler and sanding materials as a minumum.
leaves roughy £400 to do the job. in other words 2 days worth of work, unless he's doing it on the side but those jobs tend to go wrong

Do tell....

He says he gonnaa av it about 6 weeks,
Which suits me down 2 the ground,
But i can see where you are coming from about the quality,
He has assured me it will be like brand new at the end, An i ay gotta pay him until its done,

2 days??? There's more than a weeks work there.
No bodyshop, mate or otherwise would work all week for £400.
-
i never said it was 2 days worth of work. i said there was about enough cash for 2 days worth of work as in that altho it probaly should be a weeks worth of work it's highly unlikely it'll get it

I know. That's what I was getting at too.

I've always stuck to a rule of thumb £250-£300 per pannel (four doors being two pannels, two wings one pannel ) so I would expect top job to be around £1,700 upwards I've not paid more than £2K But mates rates I would have thought about 1K upwards? :undecided:

I would say your about right price wise, I paid £120 for my front bumper to be painted and they are a top notch bodyshop, for a good quality respray you have got to be looking at least £1500 +
The thing with a cheap job is how good will it look in 12mths time.
-
TBH fair I had seals and some rust sorted out which took time included in my 2K
If I had the perfect car I would have sand blasted it first, just to get rid of old paint and have as fresh coat on bare metal! Thats not cheap.
I found that if the lazy arse sprayer hasn't patted or sanded off well you get a reaction under the old paint under the new one.
Paint costs hardly anything (unless candi) its the prep thats 95% of labour you pay for!
-
This is startin 2 sound like it wont be a very good job for 800 quids

Not really mate its just would you prefer £10 per hour or £5 an hour?
Unless I know his work and see cars leave do you think I would spend anything?
-
\well im gunna pop down his workshop an av a look at sum of his work next week

I would say thats a must do...
Even if your parting with a lot of money... gotta see the work that he's doing... or you could just be throwing all your money away...
Never know you might be getting a deal of the century....
The guy who did my roof and both bumpers is/was trying to get on the car scene and was looking for people who would promote his work - so I got what I thought was a good deal... I'm very happy with the work as it's still looking good as is the rest of the car...
Will need a detail this year to keep it looking tip top...
-
If your mate is starting out and needs the business to promote his work then he will give you a good deal. If your car comes back mint, post pics on the forum and im sure other people would contact him for a respray. As mentioned seeing previous work is a must especially if your car requires welding etc. You want to see it's being done properly. If he is planning on doing a good job he won't mind if you ask him for images of the progress he is making.
My paint job cost £1800 all in. It was done by a very experienced painter and included a small amount of welding but generally you do get what you pay for. The painter gave me a step by step picture DVD of the work done on my car which is pretty cool so I could see all of the stages. Paint & clear coat costs and quality vary hugely as with everything. The paint job I got was discounted slightly, I knew it would be done well because my landlord had his Ferrari Dino resprayed at the same time by the same bloke, if it's good enough for his car it's good enough for my mk2!
There is a vw camper restoration works near where I used to live and the paint jobs on some of those vans can easily cost 7k+. Have a look on his website: www.thehotworks.com
I had some leading and welding done by him and his work is A+.
Hope it all works out and you are happy with the results!
