Title: Dipstick guide plastic fell into the tube..
Post by: JimBR on 07 January 2012, 23:07
Hi guys..

I was fitting a creation Motorsport lower breather hose this morning and accidentally snapped the dipstick tube in half. As I was getting the remaining bit off around where it attaches I'm sure a small piece of plastic 2/3mm square fell into the tube.

Do I need to now drop the sump? Or will it be okay just to drop the oil and change the filter?

I drove it for 25 minutes earlier and it was fine, surely the oil screener on the pick up pipe will filter it out? Shouldn't cause any damage hopefully?

It seems quite a common problem and pieces must fall in without people knowing when the top parts go brittle ect..

Can anyone put my mind at rest?

Cheers

on it's own it wouldn't trouble the strainer in the oil pick up, but you've just added to what is already commonly known for clogging up. If you have the tools and enthusiasm to do it and it's not been done before, now might be a good time to drop the sump and clean the pick up pipe.

So you don't think it'll cause any damage?

I've heard it's not too much work to drop the sump but it's effort, the amount of jobs I've done on mine/other peoples cars recently are getting silly and I'm losing motivation. Plus I don't have a 5mm round head Allen key for the 2 gearbox side bolts and I'd need sealant and probably a pick up pipe too.

If there's a risk of low oil pressure I'll do it

I drove mine too.

I might just change the oil, I've ordered a bottle. Don't fancy taking the sump off, the pick up pipe should catch it.

Haha!

Everytime I drive I'm waiting for the oil pressure light, everywhere I've read said it should be fine :) so fingers crossed. They crack that often it must happen a lot and people not even know.
