Not tried them myself but a friend tried on them and said they're no better than patches or gum, when both he and I eventually quit it was down to will power. I can have a smoke when out with friends drinking and feel really rough the next day from it so reminds me not to smoke when sober, been well over a year since I had one when drunk and been over 3 years since I quite day time smoking.

I quit mid nov using an e-cig, thought it was a really good way of doing it! You use it a lot in the first week or so but because it doesn't taste brilliant and you feel like an utter tit using it you naturally use it less and less, and because its in your pocket it there if you need it, but you don't feel the urge to use it, and that seems to help. Very phychological

Getting into some sort of exercise straight away helps and being in the right frame of mind too. ie don't say ' i'm trying to quit', say 'i have quit and don't want to smoke anymore'. Sounds bollox but it works! Apparently the physical addiction only lasts a few days, then its all mental.

You also realise how much you stank when you smell other smokers

I don't know if it's anything like me but there must be a switch in my brain. Can go for months, years even without thinking about smoking and one day, 'click' I'll start up again.

Oddly my brain does the same with stopping, 'click' and I have no desire to smoke again.

It's really odd, and why cigs are so insidious.

i'm on e-lites, have been since end of november, just went straight over no problems. I used to smoke menthol roll ups and thought theres no way its going to match it and have to say the menthol e-lite is the best of them all.
I never wanted to quit smoking as suuch but thought if I could still  do everything a fag would give me without all the crap in them then i'll give it a go.
havn't touchhed a roll up since.
Title: Re: Electric fags
Post by: Seanl on 11 March 2012, 08:54
I'm almost 4 weeks without a fag now. I'd tried a few times before, given up for a few months at a time twice and both using patches. I also tried the Champix tablets, but all I can think is that I had no real desire to quit that time as I didn't even cut down on them. They didn't stop the cravings, and didn't make smoking taste/feel any different. I find patches make smoking really harsh, so I went on them for just a week, and have been using the electric ones ever since. I'm kinda getting addicted to them though tbh, cos I still get real harsh cravings, and the electric ones just make it go away for half an hour like a real fag!
Title: Re: Electric fags

The best way is cold turkey & will power because you'll only get addicted to the thing you are substituting the ciggie with.  I can go out and have a ciggie and not have cravings now, which pisses my mate off because he'll have cravings for a couple weeks after  I think the after morning taste of ashtray mouth is enough to put me off smoking when not pissed

seriously give up!! ( plastic fags are stupid)
i did last week after a mini stroke. tho i didnt know it was that till i saw the doc,who went on to talk to me like i was the biggest waste of his time ever!!
tho i do get it now  :undecided:
i have the potential to cost the already hard pushed NHS thousands and thousands of pounds over the years if i didnt stop(money that would save tiny babies lives, or give some young kid the chance to live a normal life after a heart transplant)
i hate the smell of fag smoke.. and cant abide kissing another smoker
who the fcuk can afford such a disgusting habit anyway? £12 a day for some.. £15.000 over 5 years!( my days you should have seen the mk3 i had visions of when this part was pointed out lol)
and anyway.. you seriously want to watch the look on your familys faces when the doc rolls up and tells you theres nothing else they can do for you??

i started smoking the day my dad died when i was 12.. im 39 now.. ive been lucky.. but honest i have ZERO willpower,so if i can do it anyone can...

1 tip tho. dont swap the fags for sugary snacks cos then you'll turn into a fat git with a huge dentist bill and need a fag to get over the shock

go on u can do it ;)
good luck xxx

hope i dont sound [too] harsh.. but smoking has to be the most selfish pastime ever! x

Well thought I would update. A month ago a found out one of my best mates has cancer from smoking and it is looking to be terminal. The day I found out I stopped smoking. Just stopped dead and also made my wife do it with me. After a couple of weeks I was totaly fine and not even craving anymore. Dwell really good in myself and have even started going to the gym pretty much every day. It took the shock of my close friends terrible news to make me realise how sucking on a rolled up bit of paper with crushed leaves in it isn't worth my life. It scared me more as he is the same age as me and I  only 33.
I have has the odd one here as there if I have had a very hard day and just had one off a mate but that is it and I'm no longer thinking about them or needing them.

I will just add though a week after I stopped I felt like crap. Almost like a very bad cold that seemed to last a hole week. A few of my mate that have given up smoking also told me they got ill after quiting aswell.
Did any of you notice this?

I don't understand how people can have the odd one, if i did that, i would start again.
I would like a smoke, but it has been 11 months, it only takes one to be infected again.
Let's face it, it's not a habit, it's an illness.

Yup, but when I was a smoker I was always ill too - not sick as often now unless the kids pick something up at school

I don't understand how people can have the odd one, if i did that, i would start again.

Change the way you think about ciggies, don't think about it as quitting but rather changing your life style. I'm quite happy to have a few at the pub or a party and not crave them, they usually make me feel worse in the morning so that probably helps not going back on to them. I just get a bit of peace and quiet, after the moaning, because the wife gets the hump if I've had a smoke

Smokers are less likely to catch colds and virus the reasons being the smoke itself kills off alot of germs and bacteria.
When you quit the new tissues forms in the throat and is more exposed and seceptable to germs and bacteria.
Hence the after quit colds.

I love smoking it wil be the death of me  :lipsrsealed:
Plus watch the weight put on due to vitamins not getting destroyed by chemicals

I don't think all of that is strictly true  :lipsrsealed:
Colds and flu are much WORSE for smokers than non smokers.
I don't think it's the smoke that kills the germs, it's more the body will eject the poison when you actually completely stop taking it, so hence most people that quit get a really bad cough when they quit.
The body doesn't bother to eject the poison while you're adding to it.

From a trained nurse!
The reason you're coughing up stuff, having a sore throat, ear issues etc... your cilia in your airway, which are tiny microscopic tubes that move mucous and saliva along, get killed by your smoking.  Ever had a cold when you smoked, and the smoking actually kind of seemed to make you cough less?  However, these little guys are able  to  regenerate.  So, when you quit, and they start coming back, of course they start working again, and start bringing all that crap that has been sitting in your lungs the whole time, and bringing it up to the surface
That Mucous spreads the cold and germs so indirectly the smoke kills the initial start up.

Alex here is why for you aswell!

Not doubting your word of course, but i've certainly had less colds since i quit.
Maybe in the short term it is worse, but i suspect smoking certainly lowers your immune system in the long term.
If you want to use it as a reason to carry on then it's up to you, but unfortunately it is a one way trip to the graveyard

Don't get me wrong i don't hate smokers at all.
Smoking makes the brain release dopamine, that's why it's enjoyable.
Unfortunately for most people it's not a case of being able to have the odd one.
It's very much a case of enjoy it now and pay later

I used an electric cig and have since quit smoking, now ive not read the whole 6 pages of this thread but I would recommend them to any one who really does wanna quit. It takes a couple of days to get used to the novelty of it not being a real cig but once your past that it is easy.

Basically after 4 weeks of using one, over that time i was using it less and less, now I don't use it at all. I'm 23 now and had been heavy smoking since I was 16/17 (could buy cigs at 16 back then).

There are lots of different types of e-cig, but i went for the kind of "top" one which was a 'Totally Wicked Tornado Tank', i went for this because you can use different flavour niqotine liquids in it, literally any flavour you can imagine, I liked vanilla and cherry :p

but yeah blah blah blah

If you WANT to stop smoking, this is a good, satisfying, tasty way to go about it!

Hope this helps somebody to quit :)

Most people have a constant chest infection when they smoke, but it's just kept at bay underneath a layer of tar.
When you stop smoking, you stop adding to the layer of tar, slowly it breaks away.
This means sometimes you will cough up bits of black, and eventually when the infection surfaces you get a full on chest/throat infection.
Don't be surprised if you start coughing up blood

I quit smoking for a year, it was 3 months before I went to uni. After a year I had put on 6 stone!
Most people put on weight at uni and after smoking, and the two mixed together didn't help.
I've now been smoking again for a year and a half and I love it.
Tempted to get the e-cigarettes for when I leave uni and go into the big bad world.
