Welcome.
I have the predecessor to your camera the 1000d. It's a good camera for the price!
First off all in response to your question, Aperture is a good way to arrange your photos etc but doesn't warrant the price tag. I would look into Lightroom as it's simple interface makes editing photos really easy. However this is not a all out editing program for that you'd want Photoshop. Although if I were you I'd start with lightroom.
If you're going to take this relatively seriously I'd look at this book as a bit of bedtime reading:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Understanding-Exposure-3rd-Photographs-Camera/dp/0817439390/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325879248&sr=8-1
It'll explain a lot about how the camera works and how you can get the best out it. Shooting in AUTO (green square) is fine but I'd suggest trying the semi-manual/manual modes. Auto tends to result in using the flash which can make photo's seem harsh whereas a longer exposure would maybe have worked out better.
For shooting rugby I'd look at using the Tamron with the camera in Tv mode, this will let you set the shutter time, which for sport would be higher the better. Probably above 1/250.
Also have a read of the stickies above as it may help you out!
Any other questions just ask! But read the manual and other sources on the net and I'm sure you'll get great results, sign up to FlickR (free) so you can upload your pictures.
Oh and this hobby can get expensive, very quickly  :lipsrsealed:

Ooooh very nice.. I'v been thinking about purchasing a dslr camera for a while now, and that deal looks good £479.95 for the camera and lense, plus i can get it on finance

Lenses!

True!
Is it a decent camera to start with? As iv only ever used digital
-
im loving it so far my mates bird done photography at collage so I've been asking her sh!te loads tonight.
can't wait to have a play and try the bits she said.
i also took the 0% finance.
most of the places/people i spoke to said it was a good camera to start with
-
Did you shop around first price wise?
-
yea u can get the camera and a 18-55 mm lens on ebay for around 330 just make sure its a uk model as there others
but went for that bundle on a bit a whim lol. so glad i did tho i love it.

Don't expect to be able to shoot fast moving stuff with the 70-300mm stuff very easily.
The sports photographers use the Canon grey stuff for a reason.
Enjoy!

im not expecting to get the best shots but i hope to get some good ones. its not just for sports i just wanna play with it.

a few from the day they are not edited but i have cropped a few really enjoyed playing with shutter speeds and iso and aperture

Not bad for a first try.
The first one in particular is good with it's use of depth of field (ie the player nearest the camera is in focus but the rest are out of focus).
Keep it up.

Nice shots

well sort of in focus
2nd is a decent angle. if your going to shoot more sports stuff id invest in a mono pod (about 10 quid) as it will help stabilize your shots at distance.
-
distance shots were a problem i was taking 3-4 to try and get a good one but sometimes no luck.
think im going to go again this weekend and have another go, i had problems trying to get everything in the shot i wanted but couldnt get far enough back or close enough lol. maybe just where i was placing myslef.
really enjoying it so far
the first photo was a acident tbh not quite sure how i came out with it, it was in AF with just the centre one selected and the camera in Tv shutter speed 250

Where was that ^^ ?
-
up on portsdown hill in Portsmouth i think its the m27 bridge there
-
Not bad. Looks decently exposed too. Was that handheld or on a tripod?
It just needs straightening cos it's currently leaning slightly to the left.

They recently moved it.
Go to the photo on flickr, click on the button above the photo that says "Share" then click the 3rd option which says "Grab the HTML/BBCode"
This will give you the full code to copy/paste in here to put your photos up.
