Title: MK4 Handling
Post by: LowlifeDubber on 06 January 2012, 17:36
Ok so i did a search but no joy.Just a query really.
Took the missus MK4 for a spirited drive on a twisty b road earlier.1st time since weve have it.
Its lowered 45mm on Koni adjustable shocks/springs.

Ive set the dampning in the middle, stiff, soft, every combination i can have it and it just feels proper lazy going round corners.
The arse end seems to go round the corner all of a sudden and doesnt seem in keeping with the front.
It has new wishbones and drop links up front and the rear axle bushes were changed 6 months ago, there is nothing mechanical wrong with the suspension at all.

Is it just how they handle?I mean it's not a fast car(1.6 16v AZD) but i expected it to handle a little better.

Cheers.

Ah right i didnt know it didnt have one to be honest
I dont really want to go mad with this one so probably wont get a rear arb unless one comes up cheap second hand. It's only a little 1.6 after all.Just wondered if they all handled like this as her next one will be a 1.8t as she said this one is gutless  so was maybe going to consider a mk5 if they handled any better as i will be using it when the weather is pants as i dont want to get the mk3 dirty

It could be. I have Parada's on the front of hers and it doesn't understeer at all.
Got pirelli p7000 on the rear and they don't feel half as grippy.

p6000's are horrid tyres, there on my 16s and i hate them, cant wait to get the 18s back on.

rear arb, get a good one and when you come to sell just take it off ready for the 1.8t. same floor pan. makes such a difference.

so today's lesson ladies and gents, sh!t tyres on the back = oversteer, sh!t tyres on the front = understeer

who'd have thunk it

I agree that p6000 are pants. They were designed as a low grade premium tyre for rep mobiles that last quite a long time which in turn means they have a harder compound in them.
The p7000 was made purely as a sports car tyre and they are pretty good tbh.
They work at their optimum halfway through their life but then tend to wear out quickly.(can you tell I used to work for pirelli as a young un)

Their P5000 Drago was my all-time favourite tyre and they looked sexyfull too! Shame they ceased production a few years ago :(

Anyway I will stick the Parada's on the back and see if their us a difference but I cant see there being that much difference tbh :)
