thanks  fuse number 7 has blown and typically thats one out the replacement set that has been used.  it seems that this is the speedometer fuse. but on the cars paper stuck to the fuse panel, it says its for the reverse lights are they run of the same fuse then

Could do, when my lights went in the car so did central locking, no fuse lab belled as central locking, so when I changed light fuse which was blown out so did the locking mechanism. Them diagrams are as clear as mud.

Did you check the wires on top of the reverse switch?

wires checked and switch changed,
but i wonder if the wires going to the actual bulbs have got pinched or a wire has got pulled out.
as all the other lights works but several have very sensitive wiring slightest movement and the rear passenger light fail.

also can find out why the boot internal light doesnt work and cant gain access behind it to check that wiring

Check all the contacts and the plug in the bulb holder

   thanks i wonder if that means when the boot was replaced the person didnt wire the boot up properly as the boot symbol doesnt come up on the dash.
that link looks good

it would be nice to have a few weeks without  the car having a new issue

Short somewhere - what else runs off that fuse?

well there is the issue, the only other thing that seems to go wrong when the fuse goes is the fuel gauge,

but i wondered if it happened when the brake and reverse switch and wires were changed last week.

but as with most vw cars the reverse havent worked for months and months and in some manuals the same fuse is responsible for the reversing lights

Could be faulty clocks - but to try another set you will need someone to code them in

And this sounds like it is the wiring to the speed sensor under the battery

the strange thing is that the temperture gauge etc are fine purely the fuel and speedo. it is fuse 7 on the x reg 3dr right hand drive 1.8gti aum. i just phoned a vw dealership they said they thought it was unlikely we would be able to find what was causing it and we need to check the wiring that was done last week as that could have pulled something

but i have so little knowledge of the wiring of the car.i am not clear where the wires from the reversing sensor switch and casing thingy have both been changed goes except the gear box.  i know i that sounds a bit daft but i am a newbie to vw's

i hope we dont have to change the clocks as the clifford all singing all dancing alarm system runs through it as well as everything.

do u think if i found a someone with a fault code reader.it would be giving the correct or because it might have shorted out it would be giving random readings.
thanks again

Would be worth getting the car scanned for fault codes - should be the first step tbh.

My guess is the live to the sensor is broken / damaged which apperenty is a common fault - remove the battery and check the wiring under it to the sensor

just out curosity is,by checking under the battery will i need to disconnect everything or can i just remove the battery with wires still attached but move it out the way.    i do realise that probably sounds a daft question to yourself, but i dont feel ready to take on the alarm system i can avoid it sensibly :undecided:

You need to completly remove the battery - so you have to disconnect it.

Make sure you have you radio code if you have the standard head unit

Battery off job, und both the termanels 10mm, then undo battery bolt 13mm. Unclip fuse box. Move battery, you will see a plastic piece with 8 notches in it with a bolt and a wire going to it. The plastic is there to stop the o-crimp from moving as you tighten the nut. Earth wires are brown for reference purposes. I remember there being two earth points down there with the plastic pieces, battery try is held by 4x10mm bolts if you wish to remove it.

I remember I didnt do one of the earth points hard enough on a friends golf when I fitted induction kit in, this caused his speedo to be intermitant as you described.

Hope this helps.
