Title: 16v slight idle problem
Post by: 01664gti on 05 January 2012, 23:30
Hi guys

Im slowly starting to get my 16v ready for the road,I have just got it back from mot and the guy noticed that the tps is unplugged.I never noticed tbh as i bought it with no mot and have only driven it about 1 mile lol.

Anyway it idles fine with it unplugged but when i reconnect the tps the idle changes intermittantly from 1000-900 etc,Its not a massive issue but bugs me none the less.

Is the tps likely to be at fault or could something else make the tps act up.

you help would be great

Its not a tps as such, more of a closed throttle switch to activate the isv. It sounds like your isv is faulty or dirty, and its been unplugged and idle speed screw adjusted to compensate for this. I assume you are talking kr 16v...

If i remember correctly when mine was doing this, i was advised to pull out my tick over screw(i think) and clean both the screw and the fitting, it helped me

Someone will correct me if i'm wrong.. :embarassed:

Mk2 bal yes kr 16v,I had the isv problem on my 8v and also my e30 which i cured with the cleaning method. But i thought that as the switch was unplugged it may be of fault especially as it runs fine without it plugged in.So if i plug it back in as it should be and clean the isv it may be ok??

Walchy i may as well try your method too while im at it lol

Have you considered the switch is stuck or broke and thats why its unplugged?

Have you pushed it in to see if you can hear the click noise?

i can hear a click when i push the micro switch in.The throttle mech seem a bit stiff and also the cable seems a bit slack so will get some carb cleaner and jizz it all out and i will also do the isv at the same time.

Any particular method to it or just the norm??

Just clean and re grease the cable
TBH most people will run it unplugged as getting one that will fit is a nightmare, meaning I had to buy a second hand TB just to knick the switch then re tap screw holes as some are plastic welded onto the TB.
All it does is retards the fuel at rest to save fuel in idle mode.

So if i run it as is i will not lose any performance or use extra fuel etc??.

I would sooner have it plugged in and working but if after the clean its still the same ill just run as is.

yeah yours should be fine its seems to be broke one way proberly open as if it was broken with retarding the fuel you would know about it i.e no power and hesitation. But your set up has proberly been modded to take any difference the fueling would have made to the response. So plugging it back in which would require a tune up again

It doesn't control fuel, when the throttle is shut it switches on the isv, which allows a metered amount of air in, for steady idle. The fuel follows the air, via the metering head. Mine makes little difference with isv unplugged also though, seems to idle fine without it..
