What Oil do you run your valver on? (i.e grade & type)
Iv been told by both the local VW stealership and local specialist to put 15/40 semi synthetic in
Advice needed.....
Thanx

10/40 castrol magnatec. Most thicker oils are ok. Just dont go too thin or you will get leaks, these are old engines after all.
-
i would use vw synta silver good oil and seems to hold together well, im not that impressed with magnatec seems to break down (i.e. go black) a lot quicker than synta
-
i asked not long back everybody says go to vw dealerskank and buy a big tub of synta siver and an oe vag oil filtrt these have a non return valve to stop oil flowing back to your sump and stay in the hydraulic tappets when u turn the engine of, stop it souding like a bloody tractor too!!
-
Magnatec needs changing much more often because it if formed from polarised moecules that are attracted to metal. Thus all the tiny particles that would usually fall to the sump in normal oil are constantly held in suspension in magnetec.
Go Quantum synta silver from GSF, cheap and what Mr VAG recommends!

said it once will say it again, MAGNATEC is sh!t. about as much use as running your engine dry on older cars.
Get some dealer synta silver or something like delphi 5/40 10/40 depending on spec of engine, mine is on 5/40 as it is a tuned valver. Definately get a non return oil filter from vag it will save much hassle in the long run.

or you could change your tappets and the cam chain. much more efficient solution to the tractor sound.

I run mine on some stuff from work, it's called OMD90 - it's made by Shell, it's a 15/40 semi-synthetic re-badged for the military - and it's free, so I change it like I change my socks, roughly once every 6 weeks

Well i know i have an 8valve but this thread seemed relevant so...
I went to VW and got synta silver and a vag oil filter(impressed with the prices too!, bout £20 for both when i paid £25 for magnatec alone), flushed the engine as per the wynns instructions and changed it all.
Yes it runs lovely now but i still get tappet rattle. Sometimes just for the initial turn on, sometimes it stays on longer until it warms up... I am worried that my tappets are on their way out and that i may be doing damage by not getting them done!
Sorry if this has been covered, my search facility keeps reporting a database error or something. Probs my firefox or something...
Cheers!

So long as the tappets stop rattling when the engine begins to warm up you should be OK.
Otherwise it's time for a change
-
..and on an 8v its absolutely a walk in the park compared to a 16v
-
any guides to changing tappets, or should i just follow a haynes manual?
Cheers
