Title: has my heater matrix broke again? or is it more sinister???
Post by: Ali MK2 :-) on 04 January 2012, 18:33

Hi,

Does anyone have any idea why..........My car lost all it's water overheated and I had the heater matrix replaced, all good for 3 weeks.
This morning I drove off and heard a sucking noise from passenger footwell area, felt my carpet......soaked again!! Fed up with having a wet carpet now, only just dried out rom last time

Any ideas appreciated

Thanks
Ali

Where did you get the replacement? Did you remove bypass valves? Is the cooling system generally ok otherwise, stat and fan working etc? hoses not showing their age too much?

if the carpet is wet, its got to be from the matrix unfortunately. Make sure you get a quality replacement.

For any new heater matrix to go it was either manufacturing fault or the water system is generating a bloody lot of pressure. At this stage I would flush the whole system out with a two part flush from holts and even check the blades on the water pump is moving freely change the thermostat out and make sure there are no air pockets and you have a stead flow of water returning back to the expansion tank.
My guide has a German manufactured heater matrix supplier on ebay.

Hi Guys,

Thanks form your replies
I got the matrix from B and B components on ebay. I know......ebay  :embarassed: but in all fairness it was new and there feedback was good. I thought a heater matrix was just a heater matrix  :undecided:

I had it fitted at a garage, not sure if I can take it back? the heater blows.....but I could blow harder! it gets warmish but nowhere near what it should. Pipes are all pretty new. Temperature is ok at the mo,  It's making some really strange noises, coming from behind centre console, like gurgling and sucking noises. As I am just a girl lol and know bits and bobs, I not sure about trying to fix it myself.
Might just have to bypass it AGAIN and be cold, I'm pretty skint now ater paying for it to be fitted and two front tyres

Thanks
Ali

In all fairness they are not that hard to change on a mk2,I have done far far worse.

You cant live in this weather without heat as it plays havoc with misting up windows etc and not forgetting freezing your tits off lol

I've noticed B&B componets do supply one of the cheapest parts out there and that says alot to me!
I think you need to buy one from GSF and do it yourself, girl or no girl some of the lads on here are girls when they butcher their cars. But still take the plunge
Or just ask the garage to have a look again and let them do the suggesting of redoing it for pennys

Sounds like a good plan, get it back to the garage and see what they reckon. It will likely need replaced again. The 'more expensive' one listed on the GSF site is what I used previously as have others, and its grand, so thats worth a look if your buying another. hopefully the garage will take pity and not charge too much!

Do be sure to get it done sooner rather than later. Check there is enough coolant in the bottle under the bonnet. Since it has somewhere to leak from, and air can get into the system, you dont want to run the risk of the engine overheating and being damaged bue to a burst matrix. Bypassing the matrix would be a cheap fix to ensure the engine cooling side of things can carry on, but as mentioned, tits will get frozen...

Good idea would be to check HG too because burst matrix can let that go

Hi

Thanks for reading, and replying
I'm really not sure what's going on as I have checked the water level and it hasn't gone down, (I have driven it to the shops and back)
Have just thought............Had the matrix replaced, car was fine or about 3 weeks............only noticed water after I had had the car jacked up at the tyre plae to have 2 front tyres fitted?? strange coincidence.......now thinking I need to check out underneath the car for holes  but I did hear sucky noises, maybe I'm going mad GRRRRRR lol.
Got it booked back into the garage next week, I don't think it was right in the first place as the heater doesn't get very hot or blow very hard.

Check the leaf cover under the scuttle the foam seal may have given up the ghost OR it could be that the plastic scuttle cover has NOT been refitted properly and letting water down the leaf cover through the blower motor...

Good point there from X4MGS, the wet carpet could be due to a leak elsewhere. One of the common causes is blocked drains under the plastic scuttle cover (under the bonnet/below the windscreen), bringing water in through the heater box. Still, a trip to the garage would be good. Hopefully the tire fitters havent buggered anything! 'They' are getting a reputation for being a bit rough!  Hope its ok

Oooh sounds like a plan
I will check it out tomorrow, hopefully it's that and not another matrix that involves taking all the dash out and another £196 quid
As for the tyre fitters I already got beef with them for pulling my door handle off ffs
