I've paid more than that for a pair of pliers! just how good do you want that set to be
Thom

i know, if i had enough ide be paying hundreds of quid for a set that will last ages, however i need my own tool kit cause the tools my dad has are no were near up to working on a car, they barely stand up to fixing a peadle bike
i remember there was a kit with a life time guarentee which would be good cause then i can just keep the recipt and if anything breaks i can just get it replaced.
also bare in mind im 19 so not exactly on managers wages so snapon ect is out of the question

you got any links, was looking for a tool kit in the professional part cause i thought it was that that had the life time warrenty, however i can only find things that are like a set of 5 or 10 spanners, or a ratchet set and i dont want to have to buy loads of different sets then buy a tool box ide rather buy a full set if i can
-
iv got the black case, had it 3yrs now. not a prob with any of it, if it breaks, they replace it. same policy as snap on i think your find, and less than half the £££.

:D cant see the woods for the trees  cheers pal
was only hoping to pay something likt 60-70 quid, but i suppose the lifetime guarentee is worth it
-
you have to go for the pro halfords tool kit, its only £20 to £30 more expensive but its well worth it, ive had mine for about 5 years now and not had an issue.
i think some people are quite snobby when it comes to tools as i have a mate who wont use it because it says "Halfords" on it, a halfords 10mm spanner does exactly the same as a "Snap On" 10mm spanner for a fraction of the price lol when i told him this he had no come back....
-
suppose itl be a bit cheeper too with my mates discount

+1 .
-
Have the black plastic one the bigger one and ive had it for over 2 years and love it... most of the time its in my boot and you would be surprised how many times its helped me and my mates out of an evening.. only thing that is crap is the screwdriver as the plastic handle slides off but i just stick the small ratchet on the end
-
cheap= crap. Good for a diy job. Mole grips suck. :lipsrsealed:
-
The ratchets are not lifetime guarantee though. It can depend on the store as to how strict they are on that though.

These 2 are complete sh!t my lorry driver mate has both and they aren't worth 20p, he keeps them in his lorry for any work he needs to do but I always have to take my tools to do the job as these things break easier than matchsticks! and a warranty isn't any good on a Saturday/Sunday afternoon over 20 miles from the nearest halfords.
Another mate has the one clancy suggested it is better but still not very good as the ratchet spanners wear out and slip.
I used to buy cheap tools but it's not really worth it when they break and have to be replaced, I used to buy at least 2 drills per year as they used to wear out being used as much as they were, I'd pay between £80 to £100 per drill and got fed up having to replace them so bought a makita for £350 and I've now had it 5 years and it's like new.
Socket sets are the same I'd pay £25 for one and it would last a few months, I bought a draper expert set, nothing special, for £150 had that 5 years now and only 1 socket has broken, I'm not snobby about which tools I use or anything like that, it's just normally a false economy to buy cheap ones.
-
what tools you buy is very user specific. the mixture of makes and diffrent qualitys of tools in my workshop is incredible.
i allways have at least a coupke of full sets of elcheepo spanners and sockets for adjusting or jobs where you know there going to get droped in places that there not coming back from.
then decent makes for daily spannering, but all tools have a use.
i would say halfords pro or draper expert is ideal for the home mecanic , they arn't the best but there good enough and cheep enough the likes of snap-on, teng, facom, signet ect are tools that cost a damb sight more but you use earn your wage.
the really cheep stuff is best left allone thally just cost you lots a skin and a broken finger or two
-
danny has a good point, however in my experience some cheap stuff i have bought has lasted years, the halfords basic 40 or 50 piece socket set has lasted 10years and not one socket broken or ratchet failing, i would not use it as much as a pro like dan_p but for home diy go for it.
i am snobby about certain types of tools like drills [ bosch/hilti ] or cutters [ rs components ] cos i use them constantly in my job and a cheapo job wont last a week, but saying that i bought a clark 24v from machine mart and 6 years later still works like new unlike some makitas 4 times the price i have used
alot of people moan about cheapo cos they dont use them correctly
eg whats the correct way to use an open ended spanner when loosening or tightening a nut or holding a bolt? alot of peeps dont know
as i was taught in gunnery use the correct tools correctly!
-
You dont, you use a socket or ring spanner to crack it where ever possible.
Open enders are only good for rounding off nuts and bolts...
-
correct size and use longest side of jaw with the pull, ring spanners are an after thought
-
what! you have to use the correct size!!
everyday is a school day
open ended are there so you can link another spanner on to increase leverage
-
Different to what I was taught.
Obviously the correct size, what doughnut is going to try and undo with the wrong size spanner :lipsrsealed:
Also pretty sure most of my spanners are the same length on both sides of the jaws :undecided:
Saying that Ive been off work for 3 weeks cant remember where I put my tool box let alone remember what all my spanners look like :lipsrsealed:
-

Seen it done!
-
Did he work in a doughnut factory?
-
guys all open ended offset spanners have a long and short side or are you all stupid?
-
Must be stupid, as all my spanner look like this
(http://i.ebayimg.com/05/!BZw30jQCGk~$(KGrHgoOKjkEjlLm(yt(BKoSSDUQTg~~_35.JPG)
Same length both sides with the head offset to 15 degrees
-
nah mate not stupid just older and wiser  have you bit enough now?

Me! needed an 18mm spanner to take my mates steering wheel off to put it back on straight after having the draglink replaced, I didn't have my tools and his tool box had every size from 10mm up to 17mm then jumped to 19mm so had to do it with the 19mm.

Dont like being told am wrong when I know am right, had me all fired up to go and measure my spanners to the micron.... :lipsrsealed:
-
think what danny p said hit the nail on the head i to have a wide choice of makes of tools some get abused and other for the decent jobs
but what has shock me most is silverline they are cheap as chips and most have lifetime gaurentee to i think i paid a tenner for a set of spaners 8mm-22mm i have been hanging of them with bits of scaffold tube beaten them with hammers ect and not managed to break one yet got a set of stubby spanners come thru the other day and they look quite impressive for 8 quid
-
I tried to take a 10mm spanner back to halfords that snapped.. to be told I wasn't using it properly :undecided:
-
silverline sockets are supriseing they'll take a LOT more stick than you'd think, most of my spectial sockets are silverline based they are also my socket of choice for getting locking wheel nuts off
the ratchets however are a diffrent story.
