I am sure this will be a very stupid question but surely, removing the rear VW badge off my 91 valver is just a question of removing the two 7mm nuts from the inside of the hatch and then it should come off? Yet it doesn't and I don't want to start prizing the badge off and ruining my nice green paintwork. It's got a Wolfsburg Edition badge on at the moment and I'm just wanting to put an original badge back on.
Please forgive the stupidness of this question but what very simple thing am I missing?

Not held on with nuts and bolts...
The VW badge has a Plastic Tri Shaped Washer that holds it in place and is like a one time only fit unit.... There a Bugger to get off without breaking them...
-
So it is just a case of prizing the badge off once I've removed the inner nuts? And then getting some new grommets to fit the new badge on?

Would guess so... But yours is a non standard badge by the sounds of it!
-
All very interesting as the new badge has two pins yet the picture on the ETKA screen looks like it's just a single pin/grommet. The parts bloke in the dealer who got me the new badge showed me that screen too.
-
There are 2 pins but Etka just shows one but Lists 2 required...

Wolfsburg badge is possibly held on with nuts, have a close look with a torch. OE badge should be held in place with 2 plastic clips, as already stated. These push into the rear panel first, then the OE badge pushes into place, though the OE badge should sit encased in a rubber moulding, that make the badge edges flush with the panel when fitted, and hide the mounting holes...

Yeah the new badge does sit onto a rubber moulding and yes the parts guy is ordering me two new grommets so it all fits in with what you guys are saying. Just got to get the damned Wolfsburg badge off!!!!!
-
Just had a look on ebay, seems many of the new Wolfsburg badges are held on with double sided tape! If this is the case, warm up the inside of the panel with a hot air gun to soften the adhesive, and it may come off without too much force
Thom

Never thought of that Thom, especially with it having the two screws on too. Will give it a go later.
-
You were right Thom. The badge was stuck on so with a bit of heat from the wife's hairdryer and a bit of gentle persuasion the badge came away. It did, however, leave a load of rubber residue which I had to spend ages removing before putting the new one on. Pain in the backside really when it should be a 5 minute job.
And fair play to Leeds VW for getting me a new badge and grommets on special order. According to certain dealers on ebay these badges are obsolete and they are charging £30 for the privilege of buying one. Leeds VW got me both for £14.

OK, I also need some help.
I have bought a replacement VW rear badge.
As described in the posts above it comes with what I think are 2 plastic fit once gromets.
The problem is removing the old badge.
I have prised off the badge and rubber surround but in doing so I have broken what appears to be rubber lugs which are still stuck into what appears to be soft rubber gromets. These look impossible to remove.....
I am not sure what the next step should be as I don't want to do any more damage.
I will try to post a picture.

I have been trying to attach a picture to my post, but I cannot figure how to do it.
Without a picture I cannot show you the problem clearly.

Get yourself a Photobucket account, upload your pics to it. Copy the IMG code, then paste that code into your thread... easy
The broken legs are stuck in the rubberized clips in the rear panel... correct? simply push them straight through, so they drop out the back, use a thin nail or the like to do this... then refit your new badge

Thanks Thom89
Here is a photo (hopefully)....(http://i1063.photobucket.com/albums/t519/nmcculloch/IMG_0254.jpg)
Yes, the broken legs are stuck in the rubberized clips.
My main concern is that the rubber seems extremely strong (and pliable) and so a lot of force will be required to push it out.
(On the inside of the boot, the lugs stick out and are very "rubbery" and so difficult to get any purchase on to "push" through.)
I guess it just requires brute force, I am just concerned about doing damage.

Just shove em!

If the badge was fitted with the original grommets, you could straighten them out from the inside of the boot with some pliers, then push them back out through the hole in the rear panel. Inside to out as it were.
-
You won't push them out with the pins still in the clips,
Once the pins are cleared from the holes, then the new badge can be pushed straight on to the mounting clips... No need to remove them

Thanks for all your help.
There were no plastic clips on the car, the rubber lugs appear to have been pushed directly through a "rubberised" washer type arrangement which was very tough to remove.
See the before pics.

The only way to make progress was to attack it with a razor blade, cutting off the lugs on the inside of the panel and then trying to remove as much as possible of the rubber on the outside of the car. Difficult to do without scatching the paintwork too much (see after pic).

Ideally I would have removed more rubber, but went ahead and fixed the clips and badge in place. It is not as snug a fit against the body as I would have liked but we will see how long it lasts.

Make sure it's water tight or you'll end up with a damp patch!!!

I thought this would be a 5min jobbie too  All I wanted to do was spray it black. I Broke the pins off removing the captive washers
They were probably fixed as such to overcome the craze when VW badge theft was rife !
Anyhow to save a few pennies I've Areldited some thread where the pins used to be and will fasten them in-place with nuts.
