Happy New Year to you all
I am havin trouble with my 1990 8v central locking. All the doors lock fine but the boot isn't locking, I can hear the mechanism but it's not working. I found the following helpful post :
"If your boot wont lock at all I imadgine you have the very same problem I had untill this weekend.
You probally already know the locking positions of the boot key slot, but just encase horizontal with the key turned fully to the right = always open, vertical = alwasy locked and horizontal key turned all the way left = unlocked/locked depending on central locking.
If you pop off the plastic panel on the inside of the boot lid (held on my 5 push clips) you will reveal the back of the lock and the wiper motor etc. on the right hand side of the boot panel there will be a blue 'pod' with a rubber hose coming out of it followed by a brass looking rod which doubles back on itself and runs from right - left to the center of the boot and onto the mechanism which connects the push button on the boot to the lock/catch.
The rod runs through this mechanism (behind the white hooky thing) and out the other side. It is responsible for pushing the white plastic clip from side to side to lock/unlock the boot (technically its always unlocked but when the white hook is moved the button does not come in contact with it so you cant open it)
I had to use about a pint of WD40 and wiggle the long bar from left to right for about 5 minutes to free it up as mine was stuck solid. It would try to move and buzz etc, realise it was seized and give up. Which sounds like what is happening to you?
I found it helped to put a screw driver between the left hand side of the piece of metal which the white hooky thing sits in because without it the whole mechanism started to give a little instead of just the bar which goes through it.
After finnaly getting it loose and moving it back and forth whilst spraying in WD40 it now locks like a charm.
Hope that helps with the boot issue at least?"
I'm going to try following that guide. One thing I have noticed though is my key does not turnat all I the boot, should this be the case?
Thanks
Pedro

Sound like your lock has seized (Are you sure it's the correct key for the lock?)...
I would use Grease and not WD40 on the long bar where it fits onto the white slider on the button mech..

Hi,
I only have 2 keys which both work the drivers door but not the boot. Just about to start investigating the lock now, and then maybe try and sort the sagging roof lining and squeaky seatbelt If I can!

So Has one of the keys ever opened the boot lock??
If it's the wrong lock & key it would never open!! So No point trying to lube up barrel...

I have never tried a key in the boot lock. The keys which operate the central locking from the drivers door, and the central locking should operate the boot lock with normal function?
-
Factory Central Locking ONLY works from the drivers door...
But you should be able to manually open the other locks with a key...

Ah, I think we have crossed wires, I think I know what you mean. It's looks like there are 2 problems, the central locking mechanism not working and the actual boot lock clogged with crap. Good news is central locking now fixed (easy!), just trying to declog lock now

Ok so while I'm at it, onto the stiff driver side rear door
I have worked out that when the handle is pulled the pin doesn't seem to fully move down to allow the metal c shape to release. Is this most likely to be the handle mechanism (I.e cable needs adjusted if possible)?

Inside handle or outside one??

Outside only

If its a genuine one - Take it off and grease up the spring and mech...
If it's a copy - Bin it and get an Original one...

A common problem for the boot lock not working properly, can be the little white clip, that is attached to the opposite end of the rod coming from the C/L unit in the tailgate, this clip should be mounted securely to the rod, so it moves with it, but over time, the clip can become loose, and the rod passes straight through it, giving the impression that its actually working OK, when in fact its doing nothing!

Thanks got the central locking sorted. Need to get some decent adhesive to resticj the rear roof lining back on, any suggestions? Also checking levels, I find it very hard to see the fluid levels as the plastic i presume has aged and is less translucent, particularly coolant and brake levels.

I'm having the exact problem with mine but I don't have central locking.
The key won't turn in the lock to lock it.
Will the problems mentioned be the same with mine?
Is it mechanically broken or would it be seized?

You'd need to strip it down and look - but sounds like something is broken or missing...

Is it a fiddly job?

Do you have another pic, showing the clip that sits on the end of the CL operating rod for the tailgate?

Yeah, not shown in that pic, have a feeling that the clip cant be bought separately... but may be a part that comes with "16A" never mind...

I'll have a look at the Mk2 I've just rebuilt on Tues, this car has this problem that I'm yet to investigate, I know if the rod is removed, the clip doesn't fall away, so must be attached to the boot lock... it sits right under the rotating peg that operates when the key is turned, if the clip is still available, i'll get one!

Yeah the rod is just for the central locking pump...
