Title: RCD 510 0wners
Post by: dubber36 on 31 December 2011, 16:28
I've just bought an RCD 510 and am waiting for it to arrive, but I have a courtesy Golf Match at the moment that has one fitted as standard.

Now I don't have an ipod, but have music stored on a USB stick that plays through my RCD 310. Try as I might, I can't find a way with the RCD 510 where I have the option to "Mix All" so that I get random songs from random folders in a random order, in the way that it will with the 310. Am I missing something, or does it just not do it? The car doesn't have a handbook, so I cant look in that.

If I were to use an ipod, would I have the "Mix All" option? I really like the look of the 510, but don't want to loose the random shuffle option that the 310 has.

I don't know about Mix All but I'm sure there was a Mix option.

If you selected it inside a folder then it would only mix from that folder.

To play random songs from the full unit you had to select mix from a song in the root directory.

EDIT: you can get the manual here http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QUAEEENU

I thought your unit arrived a while back?

I have found the Mix option as described in the handbook, but that only seems to mix up the tracks on the current album being played.

I bought one about a month ago and fitted it into my Brother-in-laws GTI as there was a chance of making a couple of quid. I liked the look of it, so bought another one a couple of weeks ago, but it still hasn't arrived. I'm begining to wonder if it ever will.

You need to go to
"Setup"
"Media Settings" and ensure "Scan/Mix/Repeat including subfolders" is ticked.

+ you will need one song in root to start mixing from there.

The problem is, I'm the wrong side of 40 and don't really understand what "root" is. I had not gone into "Set up" so will try again when I get back home.

Update. I've been into "Media Settings" and "Scan/Mix/Repeat including subfolders" is ticked. So I guess it's down to me not understanding "root"

Ahh just copy a file on to the flash drive without it being in a folder.

Ok, I've created a file on a separate flash drive with 12 Albums on, but no separate files.

Now I can select random mix, but when I press "Selection" the songs are no longer grouped in their respective albums, so I can't just select one album and play it right through.

Is it just not possible for it to work like a 310 does?

I've had no experience of using a USB drive with my 510, but with an iPod connected you'll certainly have the ability to Mix by Songs, Artists, Albums and indeed any of your playlists.

Thanks Alan,

I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get an ipod, unless anyone else can think of what I'm most probably doing wrong.

I think you'll find an iPod a lot easier to navigate, particularly as you'll be able to create your own playlists in iTunes. When you go into Selection, you'll see all of your music arranged as playlists, so if you want to mix everything, simply go into Songs, tap a song to play, navigate back to the Media homepage and tap Mix. And that's it.

It will only mix the current album you are in.

For example you have 3 albums A, B & C

If you are playing songs from album A and select mix then it will only mix songs from album A

If you want to mix and play songs from all 3 albums then you must have at least 1 song in the root directory i.e. not in any folder.

So if you plug in your USB stick you would see Albums A, B & C and 1 song.  Play the single song and select mix and it will mix from all your songs/albums.

I prefer the navigation of the ipod but it seems to be hit and miss if you will have problems with it. Search for ipod and stutter.

Yeah you can play an album right through the way it is meant to be played or you can mix the album!!! You have full control over it.

good to know, always thought it was a bit strange it only shuffles songs in each folder. Odd that it needs one song in the root...

Whoever thought that was a good idea needs sacking, especially when the 310 is so much easier to get to do what you want.

I'm beginging to think that the better looks of the 510 are not enough to justify swapping from (imo) the far superior 310.

On reflection, now I've got it to work, it's perhaps not so bad. I still think it's stupid, but I'm convinced it's worth keeping now.

It sure is worth it cheaper than an iPod too. Glad o here you got it working though.

Dubber is it much different to the way the 310 works?

Dubber is it much different to the way the 310 works?

When playing music from a flash drive on the 310, you get your list of folders, albeit only one displayed on the radio screen at once, then the track list once the folder is opened. At any time you get the option to "Mix folder" or "Mix all"

With the 510, with your help, I have figured out how to get it to "Mix all", BUT once you turn it off, or turn on to the radio, when you turn it back on again, it does not pick up where it left off, and you need to select the root file again to continue random play.

What I am liking about the 510 in the courtesy car is the phone display when the bluetooth is being used.  Bluetooth for me next I think.

You need to perform the mdi firmware update to fix the playing where it left off  http://www.my-gti.com/3009/volkswagen-media-device-interface-mdi-firmware-upgrade-0111-kw22-2011  (http://www.my-gti.com/3009/volkswagen-media-device-interface-mdi-firmware-upgrade-0111-kw22-2011) . It worked a treat for me.  Used to drive me nuts that. Now I love how it works.
