how does the 6-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) work? Is it like normal manual gearboxes but u shift directly up and down when changing gears?
-
Like this:
(Taken from the VW website...)
'Volkswagen GroupÂ’s Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) combines the ease of an automatic car with the efficiency and flexibility of a manual.
While a conventional gearbox works with one clutch, the DSG transmission has two – one in gear, while the second has the next gear preselected. When the gears need to shift, the second clutch takes the load, while the first preselects the next gear. The whole process takes no more than three to four hundredths of a second – faster than the blink of an eye!
DSG transmissions also have a ‘tiptronic’ function, allowing gears to be manually selected. Tiptronic changes have a more ‘sporty’ feel.
There are several benefits of the system. These include improved acceleration and refined uninterrupted driving. DSG is the first of its kind to feature in a production car, demonstrating Volkswagen GroupÂ’s ongoing commitment to developing remarkable technology.'
Apparently tho u (dont quote me on this cos ive never driven one; just read reports etc) cant fool it. That is if it thinks ur gonna change up but u change down it dont matter, it does it without fuss or drama. Remains to be seen. Like ive said ive not driven one...yet!.....Might pop in and have a test drive......
Hope that helps!!

yeah., thats sounds how it works, read an article on it in pvw and it was proper in depth!!!
-
yeah the cad drawing was immense..........
this is my 2000 post
-
i can see that becoming a nightmare to fix when they break!
nothing better than a dogteeth gearbox which you can cain in everygear!!
foot to floor gear changes...... clutch not required!
-
all gearboxes like this are annoying as hell. they won't let you select certain gears unless all the criteria are met. if you're on the gas and you dab the brakes it'll loose power. If you launch with you foot on the brake before you plant the gas you'll sit there until the car decides to go. even when in triptronic mode it still won't do what you want.
all these computers are no good. bring back drive by cable :D
-
drive by cable, the only way to rag your car
-
clucth cables are an arse when they snap especially when your on a hill at traffic lights
-
thats why the clutch is hydrolic on the vr6! which is better than cable!!
-
better unless you have a leak in the tube ;)
-
of which i havent yet and if i keep it waxoyled!! hopefully never will........
but its more reliable than cable..... you certainly get a better feel and also its not as heavy...!
