Title: Visual Definition Of Rat Look
Post by: SoundillusioN on 29 December 2011, 15:47
Because of another thread I decided to post the following..  Never sure on rat look motors but I'm fine with it if it makes sense.

An old battered looking car that has had its knackered look exaggerated, fine,  or it could be an old car with bad paint that has been made to look worse than it is rather than making it shiny, also fine.  But rusty bonnets on an otherwise shiny car, or rat looking a perfectly fine looking vechile or even worse a modern vehicle, WTF is with that?

What does rat look mean?  I thought it was something derived from hot rods, old cars made mechanically sound but look rough on purpose because it suits them due to their age.

If you "rat look" a shiny newish car, you are probably a tw@t.

These are rats:

You are forgiven... no disrespect but your car isn't shiny all over, you have lack of funds and your car is old, so it makes much more sense than buying something like a mk5, making a plastic bumper look rusty and stripping the paint off the bonnet, white walling it's tyres and strapping sh*t to it's roof, then polishing the rest of the car... etc etc etc.

When I got my three door it was shiney. Just don't like red. If I had a mk5 I wouldn't rat it. Seems pointless. Even in 15years when there how old a mk2 is now it wouldn't suit it because there not made to look that way. Its like getting and old porsche and ratting it. You just dont

That mk5 looks daft, way too new to pull off the rat look.

I dont believe in rat look.
a car turns into a rat over age. Paint fading, dents, etc that dont get fixed because owner doesnt care about the car.

rat look cars that are made to look like that are sh!te and pointless.

My view was that rat cars get like that through fading, dents, etc. that the owner doesn't bother to fix because he spends all his time and money on how it drives (ie. hot rod era rat-ish cars that were faster than most on the roads)

the wife's mk3. she loves it

this is how we bought it
(http://i55.tinypic.com/2z9ayw1.jpg)

would have cost a fortune to tidy it up and make it presentable. not worth it on a £200 car

I suppose I am going to get hate for what I did for giggles to a spare knackered bonnet a couple of years ago.

Bonnet bra for Ironic statement purposes.  Even dared to take it to UD10 like that:

Its long gone now though:  http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=217619.0

Its easy to be negative about "Modern Rat", seems a lot of folks will just cover something in rust/hazard tape/kick in a few panels and feel it acceptable to call rat.  But there are a few modern rat cars that are more like art forms/extensions of the owners personality that I love.

My friend Amy's Polo for example.  For those of us who know her, know that "Patzi" the polo is almost an extension of Amy's personality and certainly a form of self expression....

And this is from the girl who has also built this:

Which started off in her hands as a rusty purple shell...

It is always going to be a highly contentious subject to broach, I find it best to adopt a "to each their own" attitude.
