Title: Rear Axel Bushes help
Post by: mcgee9t2 on 28 December 2011, 13:23
Anyone know how much rear axel bushes are?

and ive never done them before so if anyones done theres and fancy lending a hand for a few beer tokens would be much appreciated (based in darlo so anywere around darlo/boro area) dont want to get stuck/pay a garage a stupid amount to do it... or anyone know a garage around my area that will replace them cheepish? or how much vw charge?

also heard the fabia vrs bushes fit? are these uprated/better or would i just be wasting money to get them?

also would it be easier to do axel bushes and coilovers at the same time rather than fiting the coilovers then the axel bushes? and when lowering should i replace topmounts too?

cheers

cheers rich, had a look around but could only find threads from like 2007 and thought the price might have changed since, you know how much garages charge (rough price)? seems like a bit of a PITA job to do...

ok, ive got started on this, and got stuck :D after much strugle getting the bolts out that were very rusted, i started to drop the axle, but can only get it to drop about an inch, i think i see the problem, but havent any idea how to sort it so any help welcomed.

what i think it is is this...

cheers

Hmm cant remember from when i did mine, but i ended up taking the rear beam off altogether!

I needed to press my bushes in anyway (polybush) and upgraded all my brake lines to braided at the same time.

already read that mate, ive done exactly what its got written in there but cant seem to get it to drop more than an inch. think its because of the line in the background of the pics i posted... though cant see anyway to unclip that  :undecided:

Don't think the metal ones can be unclipped but the rubber ones can, im pretty sure if you leave the rear beam on, you wont completely clear the mounting so you wont be able to see clearly through the mounting.

Its for this reason i removed the rear beam!

Best of luck  :lipsrsealed:

if you're leaving the beam on you have to unbolt them really

yeah, will give it a go tomorow then, ah the joys, also could vw have put the feking bolts for the rear axles in a more awkward place, took bloody ages, not helped by the 11 years of rust on them

turns out its not as easy as i thought to take off those plates, so rusted i could only get 2 out of 8 bolts undone  and they took half a hour to get off, in the end i gave up and put the car back togeather and am going to drop it off at my cusns garage and ask him to do it and just take the whole rear axle out because im fed up of f*cking around with it now.

just out of interest anyone know anywere in darlo, boro, aycliffe that sort of area who have the correct tools to do this?

my cusns garage hasent got the tool and he said hed do it but he would have to take whole axle out stick it in a vice and give it a good tw@ing with a hammer ect untill it goes in so said someone with the proper tools might be able to do it quicker and cheeper...

This is turning into a right tw#t of a job for you aint it!

It is VERY tight (how we like it! Lol) but with the"play" there is when the beam is " floating" it is possible.

Worst case scenario, break the brake lines and bleed the brakes?

As far as the correct tool, there is one but sod buying it for one use!

Improvisation is the key.

yeah i was going to buy the tool but had other stuff to do so wouldnt have had time to do it untill sunday anyway and need the car sat night so my cusns doing it for me friday night, means i dont have to f**k on bleading the breaks ect cause chances are i was going to have to disconnect the break lines.

This is the thread I used when doing my mk3 rear bushes, same principle can be used on the mk4.
