Title: Edition 35 wheels
Post by: truckerash on 27 December 2011, 11:02
According to my calender, it's almost time for delivery of my new GTI but since seeing pics of the edition 35, I'm really struck on the Watkins Glen 18" dark steel alloys. I've also seen pics of them fitted to 'original' GTI's and I now quite fancy them on mine, so my questions are;
Can I get them fitted at my dealer?
Should I ask my dealer to quote me for a set first?
Or;- does anyone know of a better/cheaper place to get them?

But of course the burning question is....... will they compromise the "authenticity" of the GTI?
Be interesting to read any comments - good or bad.
Cheers Ash.

my 2c - yes they will compromise the authenticity, but at least you'll be a bit different from the millions fo stock GTi's out there. Stock only really counts in 40 years when people are looking for an 'original' gti. And whether there will be too many drivable GTi's VIs out there given the number of electrical comportment, I don't know.

When I got my Gti I asked the dealer to swap out the standard mags for a set of 18" visions. And they did at no extra cost!

Cheers Belix;  Your points taken on board.  I've specd mine to come with 18" Monz shadows (like the vast majority of MK6GTI's), but (strangely?) I do prefer the 18" Watkins. Presuming the tyres will be the same, I don't suppose it would be too much trouble for dealer to exchange just the wheels?
I'm half expecting my dealer to quote me a heafty price for the Watkins wheels, so at the end of the day it all depends on cost. That's why I'm asking for advise on other places to source wheels.
My dealer doesnt repoen til Wednesday 28th, so I wait with baited breath..... report back with his answer asap.

My dealer had to change one of mine and he reckoned it cost them £500! So i'd expect a heafty quote!

you could prob sell the shadows, keep the tyres and get something similar looking like the ATS race light or something by BBS and be quids in.

 buying new from VW will be crazy money

Yeah we got the same spec wheel standard except they seem to be called "detroits" here, with no option on order to change to anything else. We're getting ed 35 models in a few months, which i assume will come with 18" Watkins and no choice of anything else - sadly does not look like we'll have the option of the 19" Glendales...
(Are the Glendales the same as the audi RS3 wheels?)

They are similar but are Black rather than grey.
