Title: help please fella's- starting problems
Post by: bigpoppa81 on 12 May 2005, 15:49
i went to the jet wash this afternoon to wash my car( j reg  '91 mk2 gti)- when i was washing it i noticed a little white smoke coming from the front of my car at the grill?- i thought nothing of it cos i thought maybe it was cos the bonnet was hot and the water was cold etc? well i drove home fine, but when i went to start it just now, all the lights on the dash come on like normal and when you turn the key in the ignition it makes the wurring noise it normally makes but it wont attempt to turn over- whats happened? ive checked the engine bay and i cant see any lose wires or anything- HELP! i need my car asap

cheers

check the wiring around the starter motor, there's a good chance that the steam pressure hose has knocked one of the wires on it

when you where getting it done was the car running at the time? so this is the first time its been started since going to get steam cleaned?

i had the car turned off when i washed it, so it started ok to get me home, but then i parked up and its just not working, when i sounds like water gushing about when i go to turn the key.

right its finally starting but thats not the end of the problems

well it starts and it will rev like normal then cut out and die, i took it out for a spin thinking that the new oil i put in may be needing to get through the engine? (im a complete newbie when it comes to this sort of thing) so i took it out for a good thrash, everytime i came to stop the engine would cut out and when it comes to idling it shudders all the time the idle isnt smooth like it used to be, it will idle for a bit then when you goto rev the engine it stalls, i lifted the bonnet earlier and whilst the engine was running i lifted out the dip stick and the there was oil spitting out the tube?  and there seems to be oil splattered in the engine bay around where the dip stick and oil filter area is? when you rev it the rev dial is just sticking at 2000 even when its not at that? and then when you press more it jots to another number and back again? help

right for a start only check your oil level when the engine is cold or has been standing for a short time not when running cos it will give a false reading also try oiling with wd40 the spirngs on your throttle body, look around the non airbox end of the pleated pipe and you will see them. also check the integrity of the cover on the maf on your airbox, its the black box thing between the airbox and pleated pipe, it may have come loose allowing water to get in. fianlly check all hoses and wires are connected and not damaged
