Is this a sensible idea?
Had a cracking offer (£35) for some 35mm springs, but can not afford shocks.
Am I a tool for suggesting this? Shocks are fairly old but in good condition.

will work but when you jack the car up they will slip out and you will have to fanny around putting the spring back in position while trying to jack the car down. will also make your shocks ware much faster.
its up to you weather you do it or not, why not just buy the springs and either put them on or leave them in storage untill you can afford some new shocks or a pair of decent second hand ones come up cheep.

How will the spring slip out ?? The spring will only move or slip out when compressed. I lowered mine 40mm on standard shockers and had no trouble whatsoever. Never heard of springs slipping in my life !!!

if you jack it up the shock is used to a spring of x amount so the spring stays in place were as if you have a shock of x-30 there is going to be 3cm diff between the shock and the spring, doesent always slip out but it can as happend to my mate in sainsburys carpark when he tried to change his wheel after a flattie.
doesent slip out asin its laid on the floor, just doesent sit corectly on the shock due to the amount of play between shock and spring, all you have to do is use one hand to hold the spring in correct place as your jacking it back down and wownt slip out when driving cause of the weight of the car.
could be wrong and that vw have a different type of shock but on a few cars ive seen running standard shock and lowering springs they can slip out when jacking the car up

From memory when fitting the springs there is a cup they sit in.

The Gti is already lowered 20mm as standard so they will only be 15mm shorter.
Am I right?

They will not slip out as such but when the car is jacked up they can become loose as they are shorter, this can fail a mot.
Your better off fitting a set of shocks as well really, if you look at the work involved it is not worth doing it twice.

The only time I've ever seen springs fall out is when they have been cut- proper lowering springs don't fall out or even become too loose....

Maybe not fall out but lowering springs are shorter and they can sometimes come loose when the car is jacked up.

I agree with wayne, after me and my brother fitted eibach springs today on my golf, i really cba having to do it again, it was quite a bit of work but i will have to when i put new shocks on ha! at the end of the day up to you lad!
