Title: how do i change a gearbox ?

I have a 1996 golf gti 2ltr and having problems with gear shifts :( I am also stripping a 1993  gti and don't know if I can take the gear box off the older one and replace mine is it possible to do myself if so is there any links on how I go about taking one off ? Please help !!! There both 8valve 5 gear box

Have a look in the mk3 maintenance and info section. Jack up car and support on axle stands (get it as high as you can. Support engine on jack. Undo driveshafts at the gearbox and support them with rope from above. Undo gearbox mount from above, Undo 3 bolts holding gearbox to engine, manoeuvre out. Simples!

Save yourself the skinned knuckles and aggravation and scrap them.

At the current scrap prices you should have enough to buy another T&T Golf3 from the proceeds of two scrapped ones.  :grin:

Is it crunching between gears? If its an 8v and its just stiff it could be just the linkage assembly that needs some attention.

Ok thanks for the info Guna look at it when the weathers a bit better its stiff getting in gear. And sometimes it crunches then some tine its absolutly fine going to change transmissions oil see if that solves anything its also running at 102 oc when in traffic not sure if that's too good :( may have to scrap them both at this rate
