Title: Brake Lights...
Post by: ara on 21 December 2011, 07:43
Hi, I have a MkIV 1.8T GTI.  I noticed this morning that none of me brake lights "including the window brake light", but that the rear lights work fine.

It was too dark to check when I got to work to see if it was the fuse or maybe the brake light switch located above the brake pedal that I've just read about.

Being that all brake lights are out but the rear lights work, which is it more likely to be.

Thanks in advance guys...

Cheers...

try fuse more likely the switch though, changed mine in my ford galaxy cost £14 from fords but was stamped vw part, if it similar set up you twist out and twist new one in  and one plug only thing on my galaxy pedal had cut out for cruise control switch and at first i tried putting it in that hole which didnt fit, there on like a ratchet type thing aswell that adjusts its an upside down job and no good if 6ft 2 like me thats assuming its same set up as my galaxy it is made of vw parts but im sure someone will confirm this soon.

Mine was intermittent for about 6 months before it finally went completely

It's the brake switch.

With the old style switch (2pin, on AGUs) squirt it with WD40 to see if the plunger mechanism is sticking. Test with a multimeter.
The 4 pin is self adjusting and I don't think you can do it with that one.

Hi,

I ordered a new brake light switch and installed today following the online instructions.  Why have my brakelights gone from not working at all with the old switch to being stuck on with the new?

Cheers guys...

Hi Guys,
Sorry to jump on this thread, but i have trouble with my n/s brake light. (not working) Mk4 2003 golf)
The bulb didn't look to have blew, so i swapped it into o/s brake and it works.
Contact looks ok in n/s, so i was wondering is there a R and L fuse for brake lights?
Also while i am here, when i turn off engine and leave my lights on by mistake. should i hear some sort of warning to tell me this.
   Hope some one can help.
   Thanks Clifford

There is a separate fuse for each tail lamp F22 & F23

Yes you should hear a buzzer. Does the interior light come on when you open the door?

Hi Steve,
No the interior light doesn't come on.
I had a quick look at those fuses earlier, but will have a 2nd look.(tails lights are still working on n/s ?)
 Thanks

Door lock moduale is broke. If you get it scanned with vag-com it should throw up a code to confirm it.

Its a separate fuse for each side :undecided:

"Door lock module is broke"...... would this cost much to fix Steve, or i can live without it?
Does it effect anything else in car.
