Right I'm off to take my driving test later after having to re sit after a 2 year ban(no not DD before you ask lol)
Anyway I will be using the mrs car until the weather gets better and want to get a radar detector. On my 300zx tt I had a snooper which I built into the dash.It was a few years ago so not sure what they are like now,but supermarkets doors used to set it off.
Any advice?Apart from stick to the speed limit blah blah blah.(I just don't want to be caught out again)
Money no issue, talk to me :)
-
dont speed.

Bloody mk3 owners
I'm not planning on speeding but I think I will only have 6 points to play with so don't want to get caught out anywhere.

Then stick to the law?
Jesus, it's not that difficult.
What did you get banned for? 2 years is clearly something a bit more serious than 34 in a 30...

I know it's not difficult I'm thinking about 40s going into 30s etc
Like I said I'm not planning on speeding but I just don't want to take any chances as 2 years with no license has been a nightmare!
-
Then keep your eyes open to the road signs which will clearly indicated the given speed for a certain area. If countless other road users can manage it, surely you can as well?
What was your ban for?

Clearly far too naughty to be posted.
-
I don't need a lecture just advice on a radar detector please mate.
I'm not a 17 year old boy racer, just require some extra protection.
Please dont make out you never speed,be it on purpose or not.
I got banned for speeding btw just a little bit excessive on the motorway at 4am

With all due respect, it sounds like you do. You have been convicted of doing 154mph on the motorway, which is nothing short of stupid. Before you've even got your license back you're trying to get recommendations on devices that will help prevent you from getting caught speeding.
There's no magic trick to not getting caught. It's actually really simple. Follow the speed limit and you wont get convicted of speeding. A large number of motorists manage it, so you should be able to. It's a lot cheaper than a radar detector as well.
Oh, and for the record, I don't speed - If I want to drive fast i'll go to a track. Job done.

Nissan 300zx 3.0 v6 twin turbo id been building over 6 years to race at the pod.Was coming back from the pod to get to work in the morning so set off early as there would be nothing on the roads.
Got into autopilot mode and didnt see the copper pulling onto the slip road, took him a mile to catch up with me and then he clocked me over and average mile.
They did me for speeding and dangerous driving and resisting arrest as i refused to leave my car at the side of the road to go to the nick with him until someone had come to sit with my car.
Agreed it was far too fast etc but its not like it was rush hour. Also got my license revoked which im hopefully about to get back when i take my test at 14:30 this afternoon.

So you never cruise at 80mph on the motorway? Your speed never strays above 60mph on an a-road? Bullsh!t!

No. Why is it so hard for people to believe there are people who stick to the speed limits?
When I was younger, I used to speed a bit (not a lot). Came to the conclusion I rarely got there any quicker and it wasn't really worth it. Now, I stick to the speed limits. I drive a car that makes a hobby of drinking fuel in insane quantities. On the road, I like to keep the very low MPG up as high as possible.
On track, however, it's a very different story!
To OP, i'm not trying to piss on your chips - just saying that perhaps you need to change your mentality if you want to keep your license.
-
the goverment is planning on change the motorway speed from 70mph to 80mph  only if they had the autobarn in uk
-
2 years of not driving has seriously changed my views. I will be driving a mk3 for a start ;)
But the points Dom mentioned are perfectly viable as it does happen!I don't care how mr speed limit you are,if you miss a sign saying 50 on a 60 road(which happens) then your speeding, 3 points etc
I will just look for reviews on Amazon,it might be easier.
-
If all you want it for it to let you know your speeding get a sat nav, I use the one on my nokia n8 I have set that so if I'm on a road with a speed limit of 50 mph or less and I go more than 3 mph over or on a road more than 50 mph and go over by more than 6 mph it tells me to slow down and will repeat it's self until I listen.
good way to stop you speeding as it's annoying as f**k.
and it gives a more accurate speed than a car speedo, I do 70 by my sat nav and my car says 79 , I know the sat nav is right as when I'm behind a lorry it reads 56 my car reads 61 and lorries are limited to 56.
and it doesn't matter what you get, nothing will help if a copper follows you like that.

Nice one bob i shall enable it again on the tomtom and jobs a gudn!
(Thanks for a useful answer too )

no worries mate.

Agree to this. If you can't keep it on a track then you're going to hurt yourself, or someone else.
You say you're not a 17 year old, but you seem to have the mentality of one.
No one 'goes into autopilot' and does +150mph. You were V-maxing your car for fun and thought you wouldn't get caught.
Want to do that? There's a place for it - Germany.
Wise up and slow the f*ck down, you're not a hero.

Ah i wondered when the t0sser with a comment on everyones faults but his own would pop in with some more unwanted advice.
Thanks mate, will try to remember im not a hero.
I should have known this thread wouldnt have gone way,it's my own fault really.
Sorted now anyway thanks to Bob.

I have a wife to monitor my own faults, thanks. Plus I'll cheerfully admit when I'm wrong. Feel free to point it out if you spot it.
Thanks mate, will try to remember im not a hero.
This is your issue - you genuinely think you are a hero for being nicked being that much of a c*nt.
-
Where did all this Hero sh*t come from?
-
come on lowlifedubber and diamond hell, you can have a difference of opinion, you can hate each other, but don't turn this thread into a slagging match.

He took the bait and clearly thinks he's some sort of a pub hero for getting nicked going that fast.

Mk1macca sell your car now and buy a micra, then you can legitimately join the 2% of people on the road that don't speed.
-
My Maserati does 185 I lost my license, now I don't drive.... Life's been good

My choice of car has exactly what to do with my choice to obey the law?
-
Well either way I'm not fussed. Just passed with 2 minors. RESULT!
-
2 minors? that's outrageous!!!
weren't for speeding were they?
congrats. :afro:

Was just going to point out the same!
I was hoping to get an answer from the OP's original question. Just for the record I sometimes speed and I really dont give 2fcuks what anyone thinks

but he's speeding Guy!

If all you are after is a GPS speed camera detector as the one you listed from amazon you can get apps for iphone for free/very little that do the same. (If you have an iphone of course!)
Its worth noting that these only alert you of fixed cameras like a sat nav does.
The devices that detect radar are illegal in the this country although are still available on a few websites (foreign companies i believe like Snooper). Those devices are pointless as it only tells you off the radar once its already hit your car / pointed towards the car, by then its far to late.

you can still get a garage door opener/radar scrambler that scrambles the radar when it hits the car, it is legal as long as you have a reason for having it fitted, but you will end up in court if your found with one as you will have to prove a legitimate reason for having one, as they are not legal if the only purpose is to avoid speeding tickets.
they are for gates, garage doors, driveway lights, ect. to open/switch on whatever the receiver is fitted to, automatically, obviously scrambling radars was never the intention when it was made, it's just a great side effect.

I DO!!
well for a couple of seconds after I hit them.... esp all the damage they could have done to the underside of the car. but then I remember its worth it to keep the streets clear.

I wondered when someone would point this obvious point out.
If you got stopped by the police (for something like a broken rear bulb or a random spot check) and they checked your record and found a radar detector in your car, you'd be in for trouble.
It's not worth it.
The majority of fixed speed cameras are on most sat navs, so if you're on unfamiliar roads, just turn it on and you'll get a warning (mine tells me when there's one upto 1km away).
If it's a cop with a radar gun or a "talivan" then you'll just have to leave it to a) your ability to spot it and b) luck.
I know what you mean about going from a 40 zone to a 30 zone.
Myself and my mum both got caught while driving in convoy because an unmarked police van was sitted over the brow of a hill where it went from 40mph to 30mph. I was caught at 34mph.
Well done on passing your test, not every experienced driver would be able to pass the test again without doing lessons.
Now just be sensible and enjoy driving.
-
I understand its not illegal if you forget to turn it off.. I can be very very forgetful!!
As an example sometimes I forget to even turn off the light, or flush the toilet, or go shopping on and evening, then playfootball on a weekend, and tomorrow I have arranged to meet my mate. Looking forward to it as we might be booking a snowboarding holiday tomorrow. Must not forget to polish my boots.
-
i got a TALEX for the wife. it works by gps and tells you the speed limit and tells you off if you go over the limit. plus it has the fixed camera sites on it. it is up dated by the web. some times when you are on the motorway it tells you to slow down if you are in road works which have finished this is due to me not up dating it.

Well done. And you are completely legal with that too!
Does it come with free updates for new camera locations in the updates for the App like other Apps? Or do you have to purchase them?
-
Well,it is £1.99 if you buy it monthly or £17 for the year and for that you get updates whenever you connect. The files are like 100mb though so i have made sure i update it at home rather than it doing it via 3g and raping my data allowance.
Would recommend it,works a treat.
-
I think if an app is more than 20mb it won't downloa unless on wifi anyway :) personally I don't use one but have it on my sat nav.
Good choice :)
-
If you find the one you want then let me know. My partners father runs a car part business, and radar detectors are one of his specialities.
I think I'd be able to get you a good price on one.
