hi guys im new here, never owned a golf before and looking for some advice.
my RS clio should be sold as of tuesday so ill have a nice pocket full of cash to spend, looking for a cheaper to insure car. narrowed it down to etiher a mk3 or mk4 golf.
now i can afford either, its purely down to which one i want. and i cant make my mind up
so help me out, whats the pros and cons of each car. i love the look of both for different reasons, i would be getting a 2 litre mk3 or a 1.8t mk4
cheers for any advice

Welcome!
A mk4 1.8t are the one to go for!! Have a look
In the clasifides!! Can pick them up cheap these days!
-
They are the obvious choice, there's just something about the mk3 I love. And if I wait too long they'll be too old. Plus there cheaper so more money for toys

ive read the mk3 buying guide thread, all the rust i can check for except under the arch covers. is there any way to check for rust under there?
cheers guys

MK4 mate, welcome to the forum
-
i like them both :/ cant make my mind up lol
just how sexual is this... http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a321/darkartist1989/Mk3%20Golf/3780159498_7b85e58cb9_b.jpg
sure once ive sat in and driven both ill have a clearer idea of what i want
-
You will be restricted to how much you can do with a n/a gti thou :/ not many toys
-
late mk3 if you want toys (and a 1.8t conversion can be done fairly cheap if you want power) or go for the vr6 if you need/want the noise
(both heavy with soft soggy ride as standard but a few choice mods and you can transform one)

Rust is easy to spot on a Mk3.
If the jacking points are mashed, most probably has rust you can pull back the plastic back quite a bit so take a lenser type torch and check well.
Walk away unless it is clearly only minor, that part of the car gets really sprayed in the wet and fills up inside making the rot spread.
The rest is easy to spot.
I have seen a few really solid low mile Mk3's of all engine types going for under £700
-
My mk3
-
A Mk3 GL doesn't have arch trims so you can check for rust, and it looks cooler in some cases.
Plus, you've then got a great excuse to start thinking about putting a gutsier engine in.
-
Aren't the gl small engines ? I'd rather buy a gti and take the arch trims off , that was my plan anyway
-
welcome
cant be arsed to go on which is better

thanks for your help mate, yeah it was jus under the trims i was worried about really.
im lookiing at two mk3s soon with only 2 owners each and under 100K miles so should be pretty good

ive only seen one in like a hundred miles for about 1K and it was a dog lol. there more like £1500+ from what ive seen. which is fine but then mods are more expensive and so is maintenance etc. cant make my mind up
